Hospice of the Valley is pleased to announce the 2008 publication of Finding Your Way Through Grief: A Guide for the First Year, Second Edition, $12.
The book is written by Marty Tousley, CNS-BC, FT, certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, certified grief counselor, and a member of Hospice of the Valley's Bereavement staff since 1996.
Copies are available through the not-for-profit agency, 602-530-6970. Founded in 1977, Hospice of the Valley is one of the nation’s oldest and largest not-for-profit hospices. It is a leader in educating others about end-of-life issues.
Originally published as a first edition in 1999, this popular and well-received book is a sensitive, informative guide to help survivors understand and cope with the feelings and experiences they're likely to encounter in the first year following the death of their loved one.
The book was reviewed by the Rev. Paul A. Metzler in The Forum, a quarterly newsletter of the Association for Death Education and Counseling, in April/May/June 2005. He praised the book as “well written and compassionate,” and said it “conveys realistic hopefulness for the predictable and unpredictable passages of the grief journey.”
Revised and expanded in 2008 to include a fourth section -- Helping Another in Grief -- the second edition is designed to help readers:
- Dispute some of the common myths and misconceptions about grief and loss. Understand the grief process as a normal yet highly personal response to loss. Recognize the physical, emotional, social and spiritual effects of grief.
- Understand the differences in mourning patterns among various family members. Explore ways to manage grief.
- Move through difficult celebration days such as anniversaries, birthdays and holidays.
- Know better how to respond to another person in mourning.
