Lets start with Black on Black crime. How about the generations of Black children who have gone through life fatherless due to social problems indigenous to lower class Black urban society?
White men have their problems as well, but they are not so defined by race! I guess that's white society's fault for not spending enough quality time in the ghettos & projects with their African American criminal brethren?
I'll try to do my part in the future - maybe I can learn to sell drugs when I'm not working 75+ hours a week.
Keep your 40 acres and a mule. Hopefully, you'll take care of them properly?

| IT'S NOT BEING RACIAL. BUT EVERY TIME, AND I DO MEAN EVERY TIME WHEN (SOME) BLACKS DON'T GET THEIR WAY, THEY PULL THE CARD. BUT GUESS WHAT, THAT CARD HAS BEEN PLAYED OUT!!!!. RACISM RUNS BOTH WAYS. PERSONALLY I DON'T CARE WHAT COLOR A PERSON IS. THEY CAN BE HOT PINK FOR ALL I CARE. BUT IT'S A SHAME NOT EVERYONE THINKS THAT WAY.

When I started this post,I specifically asked that people"play nice" because racism, real or perceived,is a nasty topic and people get carried away. Then nobody takes you seriously.Personal attacks on public figures is not costructive to positive change, either.
I simply wanted to make a point and apparently that point flew right over everyones head and that is this...
It is not skin color, but whether you have the right last name or not that gets you jobs in this county. If you are white but you do not have the right last name, guess what? You ain't getting the job!
I respect the NAACP for the principles it was founded on,but deep down in my heart I would like to think that the late great Medgar Evers never intended for one race to be promoted over all others, rather he wanted us all to be treated equal,to get a fair shake.

| MR.HALL, MAYBE YOU SHOULD LEARN A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY. LET'S TALK ABOUT RACES WHO HAVE BEEN WRONGED. THE JEWS. NO OTHER RACE ON THIS PLANET HAS BEEN BEATEN,DISGRACED AN MURDERED BY THE MILLIONS SINCE THIS PLANET HAS BEEN TURNING. BUT YET THEY HOLD THERE HEAD HIGH,WORK HARD AND HOLD HIGH POSITIONS IN GOVERNMENT TODAY. NATIVE AMERICAN'S. THEY HAD THEIR LAND STOLEN, THEIR VILLAGES BURNT EVEN HAD WHOLE TRIBES WIPED OUT. THEY HAD THE SAME THING THE BLACKS HAD TO GO THROUGH BUT LET THE NATIVES LET THE PAST, PASS AWAY. NOW THEN. THE PAST IS JUST WHAT IT IS AND MEANS THE PAST. THIS WORLD IS NOT FAR AND BEING A GOD FEARING CHRISTIAN MAN THAT YOU CLAM TO BE YOU KNOW IT'S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. YOU KEEP HARPING ON SOMETHING THAT HAPPEN LONG BEFORE OUR TIME AND COMPLAIN IT STILL HERE CAUSE TO UNQUALIFIED BLACK MEN DID NOT GET THE JOB THEY APPLIED FOR. SO I ASK YOU THIS MR.HALL SINCE YOUR AN EDUCATOR, HOW COME YOU DON'T APPLY FOR THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OR ANY OF THIS POSITION'S. IN THIS I'M NOT SAYING THAT THE MORON'S IN THERE NOW ARE QUALIFIED TO BE THERE.

I would like to give you my take on your comments concerning spreading political crap and jobs in the community. As an educator and researcher for well over 30 years, before I sign my name to any document I always research the topic thoroughly. Since my involvement with the NAACP we have researched, filed complaints on (6)issues in Somerset County. Several went to court and we have prevailed on all of them. If you desire I can mail you a copy of them.
if any race of people have been wronged, then someone has to stand up and serve as a voice. When we had to sit in the back of the bus, order our food in the back and drink out of different fountains, some one spoke up. Both members of the Black and White community said it was not time for change. When is that time going to come!
Secondly, it is difficult to encourage industries to come to Somerset without being at the table. I am the parent of five children and all but one left the county because of lack of opportunities. I believe that with a joint effort of all communities we can provide industries with a citizenry who are able to perform the work that they desire and need!
Lastly, why is it that we are so hard on Black men and yet find no shortcomings in men of other races and quick to publicize it. We all have faults! I do agree that it is time for others to step forward and get involved. Take care!

To the Writer making reference to poor white people:
I too was born into a very poor family. However, we did not know we were poor because we had each other. My goal in life is to help anyone in their time of need. My past history will attest to the fact that I have offered assistance to any and everyone who requested it! I hope by now you have read my editorial from the disparity meeting. It will take all of us working together and helping each other to change Somerset so that we all can have the opportunityto enjoy the good life!

The author of the following requested this be printed in the Crisfield Times, however, because of its length is it being posted here now in its entirety.

On behalf of the Somerset County Branch of the NAACP I would like to thank all those who took of their time to join us [June 11, 2009] in a community discussion on issues that we believe are inherent in our community as it relates to racial relations and disparities. At the forum, time did not allow me the opportunity to give a presentation so I felt impelled to present it in this fashion. In 1992 I served as advisor to a group of diverse UMES students who were members of an organization called the Bahai Faith Society. From those students and from circulated information this message is a result of my associations with those progressive students. To the citizens of Somerset County:
If I may point out, we all are aware that the term racism and its implications are the most challenging issue that confronts America today. To continue to ignore the problems that are inherent in our neighborhood leads to the on-going exposure of our county of Somerset to physical, moral and spiritual danger.
We are a nation whose ancestry includes every people on earth, whose motto is “e pluribus unum” when interpreted means (out of many, one), whose ideals of freedom under law has inspired millions throughout the world, and it cannot continue to harbor prejudice against any racial group without betraying itself. Racism is an affront to human dignity, a cause of hatred and division, a disease that a society cannot sustain.
We believe that racism has led to the “minority hiring disparities” that continues to work its evil in our community. Progress towards tolerance, mutual respect and unity has been painfully slow and marked with repeated setbacks.
History tells us about Somerset:
· After the 1954 decision of Brown v. Board of Education – Somerset County was one of last counties in America to integrate its public schools in 1969. Given that the United States Supreme Court issued a federal order to integrate schools in 1954 — some 15 years earlier.
· We still have many citizens still active in the county that were involved in the hosing of Maryland State College (UMES) college students in the year of 1965
· This study is indicative and a close duplication of a previous 1991 study with some of the same racial implications. The editorials appeared in the Somerset Herald and Daily Times.
· In 1992, Dr. John R. Wennersten authored a book entitled “Maryland’s Eastern Shore: A Journey in Time and Place” and in his book he devoted a complete chapter to the motto of “Semper Eadem”… and he concluded that from his research it seems that many on the shore have become conditioned to the maintenance of a racial caste system
· In 1996, Dr. Meredith Ramsey completed a study which is now in book form entitled: “Community, Culture and Economic Development: the Social Roots of Local Action” – it too focused on the motto “Semper Eadem.” and today we have before you a
· “2009 Minority Hiring Disparity Study” some 13 years later with almost all areas of leadership the same and with the identical theme “Semper Eadem”.
We together……. The NAACP and the ACLU are here this evening, to appeal to all people of goodwill to arise without further delay to resolve the fundamental social problem that have persisted in Somerset County for over 300 years. It has now become our shared responsibility!
The well being of our county of peace and security are unattainable unless and until its “unity” is firmly established. The proof is in the fact that, given the same circumstances, all people regardless of ethnic or cultural variety, behave essentially the same way.
The oneness of humanity is a spiritual truth abundantly confirmed by science. Recognition of this truth compels the abandonment of all prejudice of race, color, creed, nation and class-of everything which enables people to consider themselves superior to others.
Poverty afflicts member of all races, though; its “victims” tend to be largely people of color. Neither white nor black should assume that the responsibility for the elimination of prejudice and of its effects belongs exclusively to the other. Both must recognize that there is only one human species. We all must recognize that a harmoniously functioning society that permits the full expression of the potential of all persons, can resolve the social and economic problem now confronting our community with, “disunity”. All groups must realize that such problems can neither easily nor immediately be resolved. However; all groups must understand that no real change will come about without close association, fellowship, and friendship among diverse people.
Tonight (June 11, 2009) and from this day forward, we must digest the report and not make excuses and fill our hearts and minds with the stench of continuous denial, but study the problems that radiate from the study, what ever background we originate from. We need to look at the racial divide with new eyes and with new determination to lend effective support to the resolution of the problems that currently exist. Therefore we need the transformation in character necessary for personal growth and maturity to create a better Somerset County – that includes all people. Remember, when one part of an organism suffers all the rest of the body will feel its consequences. To this issue I make reference to our children and grandchildren. But, the question remains where do we go from here? From the 1967 Martin Luther King address: we must first honestly recognize where we are now! The dignity of an individual will flourish when the decisions concerning his life are in his own hands!!

Call it what you want......but, often times QUALIFED minority applicants aren't available or don't apply for jobs. Then people want to complain that miniorities aren't being hired....jobs don't come to you, based on color. You have to have more qualifications then the color of your skin.
That said, hiring problems do exist and where (and when) they do the job QUALIFICATIONS need to be compared by a 3rd party------not the individual that thinks they have been wronged or a community that thinks they can make a point.
Being well informed and educated on the suject gives you credibility.
There are industries, schools and agencies that have LOWERED testing standards and job requirements in an attempt to accomodate miniorites. What does that say? The fact that standards had to lowered just to TRY and get you hired, schooled or accepted. This is a shameful state we find ourselves....

Since nobody else wants to talk about the "elephant in the room" I HAVE to bring it up.I welcome anyone elses opinion but lets not get nasty, please!
The NAACP recently reported that there are not many blacks in substantial county positions in Somerset and they seem to think its a racial thing.Guess what?It is not a black or white thing at all but a "who you know" thing.I have considered applying for such a job before(county job with bennies) and had someone on the inside tell me "don't bother to apply, they already have someone handpicked for it but they still have to advertise".WTF?The NAACP should ask around and they will see there are just as many white folks being screwed out of these jobs,we just do not have any special interest group that cares enough about us to make an issue of it.
And I am a little disappointed by the comment Mr. Ken Ballard made about "being sick of all the white faces he sees" in county buildings. I know him casually and I will never feel the same again when I talk to him because I will always wonder if he sees me as a fellow human being ,or "just another white face".Racism cuts both ways and it hurts.
