I don't have anything new to add to this thread, but hope that one more "vote" will help convince the organizers: Crab Derby is badly overpriced!!!  More specifically: the rides are overpriced.  I have looked forward to the festivities every year for a looonnnggg time, and I still go because at my age I don't go on the rides anymore--I'm there to see old friends and to reminisce.  But I don't go with my family anymore because my children and grandchildren no longer have any interest in the derby simply because there are carnivals that are just as good or better at a more reasonable cost.  I sincerely want to thank the organizers because I know it is a huge amount of work, but please--for the good of the derby--listen to the people and do something about the rides!!  The bracelets sound like a good idea to me.

Vavoom, why do you insist that the rides at Crab Derby are 'mediocre at best' when you yourself admit that you have not been in years? :D

Sherwood Amusements have very nice rides and try to provide something for all age groups. They are only allotted a certain amount of space for the rides - if they had more space they would provide more rides.

If anyone on the "Crab Derby committee" is reading, listen up: Armbands for rides! The cost of tickets for rides that are mediocre at best is embarassing. Not everyone in this town has money. There are local firemens carnivals on the Shore, within driving distance, that charge just $10-$15 an armband to ride all night, and there are at least a dozen rides to choose from at most of them.If you make it affordable for families with children, attendance will swell!

Sherwood Amusements are the ride vendors for the Crab Derby. They are nice and friendly folks with safe and clean rides for our youngsters. They are the ones doing most of the fairs here on the shore now.

Sherwood Amusements have wristbands but it is not their call - it is the call of the Crab Derby Association. So, if you want a wristband - you will have to take that up with the crab derby committee. I would like to see a wristband if even for a few hours - maybe Sun. 1pm - 6pm. that's when it's slowest and the derby could still make money from it.

Thats EXACTLY why I have not been to a Crab Derby yet.Any of the firemens carnivals on the shore have way better rides at a more reasonable cost.

I agree, the Freedom Fest was nice, but really? Charging more to get in than the Crab Derby does???

As a child I remember begging my parents to take us to the Crab Derby each night it was open, I later learned why we only made it on one night, possibly two.  If you have children, it's cheaper for you to go to OC and let your children enjoy a full day of riding the rides with a bracelet.

I remember last years rides...4 dollars to ride on the Ferris Wheel for what? 3 minutes? Come on Chamber...can you not find a better vendor for rides? As far as the food/craft/gift vendors, I personally know what you charge them to use the spaces they are given, so your making money!

Do away with the admission prices! Get better ride vendors! Or shut it down!

CRAB DERBY IS LIKE A BIG HOME COMING. YOU SEE A FEW PEOPLE THAT YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IN A LONG TIME. I'M SURE VOLUNTEERING TO HELP IS A BIG CHALLENGE, BUT NEW IDEA'S MIGHT WORK.

The Crab Derby is put together by many volunteers, I used to be one.  I am too busy with work now to be involved but it was a lot of hard work but only the same handful of people.  What that experience did teach me was that unless I was going to be a part of the solution, I should not be a part of the problem.   Don't like the Derby? Volunteer to make your ideas part of the celebration.

And always remember.... "people in glass houses"...

I remember there was an Eagles tribute band last year and this year it's a Rolling Stones Tribute band. The price of tickets for these "tribute" bands are the same prices you would pay for a mid-range National Act. I don't have any numbers on how many people actually bought tickets...real Rolling Stones tickets would be about $200 for nosebleed seats, so I guess $25 for the "next best thing" is reasonable. Although I would like to see 2 big-name REAL acts come play.

What keeps me away is the same food/gifts/games/ride vendors they've had for years. Everything is overpriced there, especially after paying for admission. Also the parade needs more support. Last year, a pick-up truck with a bunch of dirt and s**t on it promoting a car wash won "best float". I believe ECI had the only real float in the entire parade, the rest was filled with cards and a few community organizations.

I hear alot of "from-heres" talk about the days when the Derby was at Brick Hill and no charge to get in,and it was better back then too

They charge WAY too much for the few amusement rides they offer, and I am just not in the mood to get fleeced.Theres other, nicer carnivals on the Shore where my kid can ride all night for 10 bucks.I do like the historical aspect of the event, but it is not affordable for some people, especially those with kids.

Has anyone seen the list of events for Crab Derby 2009? It seems to be the same as years past...almost carbon copy. I understand parts of the Crab Derby are tradition (especially the race & picking contest) but how about some new events?

The last Crab Derby I went to was 2 years ago and during the race, I noticed most of the crowd started to leave after the 2nd run. I was sitting next to a group of people from Baltimore and they told me it was their first time coming down for the Derby and probably their last considering how uneventful it seemed.

I also noticed that most people complain about the price of admission.

Where is the creativity here?
