Family Nurturing the Key to Musical Accomplishments
Much of the entertainment we enjoy comes from accomplished professionals who know their instruments and musical craft well. What sometimes is overlooked, and misunderstood, are the years of dedication that go into the training and nurturing of a young musician. This is where Band, Orchestra and Choir Parents come into the picture, supporting their children’s endeavors and entire music programs through donations, fundraising, ticket sales, etc.
“I have had the honor and privilege to teach musicians from 10 to 80 years old,” explained Dave Balogh, “and they all have one common factor, parents that transported them to concerts, sat and listened to the good and sometimes excruciatingly painful wrong notes, and undying loving support.”
Music teachers are only a small part of a student’s life, according to Balogh. “’Music parents’ are absolutely the true heroes in the whole musical experience,” he said.
“As the director of Bands at Thunder Mountain Middle and Desert Vista Elementary schools, this small article of recognition has been a long time in coming, and I would like to personally thank “ALL” the Band Parents for their enormous amount of time, money and devotion they invest in the musical education of their children. There are so many devoted parents and there are a few of the families who went over and beyond anything expected in their assistance,” emphasized Balogh.
Balogh notes one parent in particular and the need for drum covers. Monica Croom volunteered to make covers for the much-used bass drums to prevent some of the wear and tear, according to Balogh. So when Croom volunteered to make covers, Balogh thought some canvas with the school logo would be just fine. He was, however, speechless when Croom and her son, Johnathan, presented the covers that had been crafted using a professional quilting loom and were specially fitted.
“These would have cost over $1,000 had they been special ordered, said Balogh “How could you special order something like these that were made with such caring? Only a parent would put in this kind of time.”
Other families have also unselfishly donated their time and were acknowledged by Balogh for their contributions. They are the Downey, Klewer, Shroeder, Machajewski, Simoe, Bullock, Muzio, Autieri, Bell, Coleman, Hillman, Ingraham, Dennis, Stout, Turner, Schultz, Nelson, White, and Wyatt families.

Volunteer Engineers ‘Spark’ Interest
The engineers affiliated with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) are worried about the future of engineering in the US and they are determined to do something about it. All too frequently students entering college are selecting career paths avoiding those involving math or science and that according to retired electrical engineer Bill Carr will cause a loss of a world leadership role in science and technology.
“Each year the number of students from the US entering one of the fields of engineering is falling and are being replaced in colleges by students seeking engineering degrees from other parts of the world,” said Carr. “We hope that through our efforts we can encourage kids in this country to enter these fields.”
The organization has put together a cadre of retired members who have an inventory of 50 lesson plans that include everything from assembling a solar powered calculator to designing an irrigation project. The projects are presented in classrooms around the valley in an attempt to demonstrate to students, grades 4-12, how interesting and what it takes to be a successful professional engineer in one of 25 major engineering specialties.
“It’s never too early to begin preparation for a career in engineering,” explained Carr. Students who think they may be interested can begin as early as middle school to take class work that will eventually lead to their degrees.”
Recently, Carr and Engineer John Fitch, worked with students in Linda Seese’s fourth grade class at Four Peaks Elementary School. Students worked through completing a switch circuit which when connected light a bulb. Lesson plans are based on the age of students. The visiting engineers provide the materials and under the supervision of classroom teachers, walk students through the hands-on projects.

Apache Junction High School Students are Blood Donor Champs
Apache Junction High School students were honored last week in special ceremonies at Chase Field prior to an AZ Diamondbacks game for winning their division of the United Blood Services Arizona High School Blood Drive Challenge. For the third year in a row, they have achieved the highest percentage of blood donation for a school in their size range. The school has achieved the Platinum (highest) level of participation.
Most people do not realize that approximately 1 in every 13 blood transfusions comes from a high school blood donor and that teenagers make up one of the largest single donor groups in Arizona. The High School Challenge theme is “Find the Hero in yourself.”
Sponsored by the AJHS Student Council, there are three blood drives held each school year on the Apache Junction campus. On May 6, during the latest drive, there were 94 units of blood collected.

AJUSD taking Proactive Approach to Possible Swine Flu Outbreak
In preparation for any possible local outbreak of Swine influenza, officials at the Apache Junction Unified School District are taking a proactive approach. The Pandemic flu section of the Emergency Management Plan is being followed and coordination with the Pinal County Health Department and the Arizona Department of Education has been initiated on this matter.
Custodial staff began last week wiping down all hard surfaces in the classrooms and other district buildings with disinfectant as suggested by health organizations. In the classroom, children are being reminded to wash their hands frequently or use hand sanitizer to keep their hands clean, and also to cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing.
In an effort to keep parents informed, letters were sent home on April 29-30 describing these preventive measures and urging adults to reinforce these health practices at home as well. The letter also describes the symptoms of Swine flu and asks parent to please keep their children home from school if they exhibit any of the symptoms as outlined.
The community should know that county health offices will know of every confirmed case and will report them to the schools and their districts.
At that point, if a student or staff member is identified at any school with the infection, the following will occur:
· The county will notify the district and school affected.
· The school will be closed for seven (7) days, which is the period of time during which symptoms would appear.
· The closure would occur at the end of the school day. (The school would not be evacuated immediately.)
· The county health department would contact school and district administrators before any type of news conference concerning the infection and school closure would be held.
· A letter will go home with all students with information concerning the closure.
· All school activities, including sports, after school program and special events like promotions and graduation would be canceled.
· Students would be advised not to gather in groups during the period the school is closed.
· A sibling of an infected student who attends a different school would be asked to stay home from that school for seven days.
More information concerning Swine flu is available on the AJUSD Website (click on News or Emergency Information). Links to the CDC, and other health organizations, carrying the latest information and updates on the Swine flu situation are listed there. This site will also be updated periodically when new information is available.

AJUSD ‘Mathletes’ Win Top Prizes at CAC County Competition
AJUSD “Prospector Mathletes” and their math teachers are basking in the warm glow of academic triumph this week. Celebrations of this success are going on at Apache Junction High School, Thunder Mountain Middle School and Desert Shadows Middle School.
The reason? A combined co-ed math team, composed of high school students and several 8th graders from the middle schools, returned last week from the 33rd annual Central Arizona College Regional High School Math Competition with the Sweepstakes Trophy, awarded to the school that accumulated the highest number of points overall at the competition.
The “Nerd Herd,” as their t-shirts donated by the Booster Club proclaimed, took the top prize and a great many of the individual and team prizes as well.
Seniors Katie Turner and Zach Decke won the Advanced Team Competition. Jacob Jones, Josh Brownlee and Eric Penick won fourth, third and first in the Individual, Open Competition.
The overall group score that snagged the Sweepstakes Trophy was bolstered this year by the addition of several middle school students who are taking 9th grade level algebra in 8th grade. These AJ 8th graders represented AJHS and swept the first three places in the Level I competition.
Gracie Turner and Grace Kennedy from TMMS took first place in Level I Team Competition, while classmates Caleb Shroyer and Riah Grams took third place in the same category. The team of Micah Raney and Amber Rink from DSMS completed the sweep.
Caleb Shroyer took first place in the Level I competition and earned the right compete in the open competition, while Micah Raney and Amber Rink took individual medals in Level I as well.
AJHS teacher and Math Club sponsor Thom Olmstead said, “I’m extremely gratified that students from all levels and their teachers not only participated in the CAC math contest, but performed at the highest level. The preparation time and commitment to excellence resulted in amazing results. It was phenomenal.”
He added, “The shirts that were provided from the Booster Club added to the sense of team unity and made me proud to be a member of the AJUSD academic community. “

AJHS’ NJROTC Academic Team Takes #2 Spot in Regional Championships
The Academic Team from Apache Junction High School’s NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) made big waves in San Diego, California recently when they took on some of the top schools in California and beat them all in the preliminary rounds of the Western Region Championships, earning the top seed in the final top four competition.
Going head to head in the finals with the powerhouse Troy (a California magnet school for gifted students), the AJHS team ended up taking second place among the 16 schools competing in the “Super Brain Brawl” for the Western Championship.
The AJHS team, composed of student cadets Chance Carlson, Austin Kennedy, Logan McClincy and Taylor Meason, was the only team from Arizona that had qualified in earlier competition to participate in the Western Championships. But they represented Arizona proudly and successfully by finishing in the No. 2 spot, and were referred to by organizers as one of the “powerhouses” in the competition.
Questions concern current events, history, oceanography, astronomy, leadership and government. The academic team had gone on the annual spring NJROTC trip to Hawaii and were coached and quizzed by fellow cadets during the days preceding the event. The entire group stayed over for the competition on the way back to Arizona.

AJHS’ NJROTC Cadets Visit Hawaii, See History Over Spring Break
Visits to the USS Arizona Memorial and a personal tour of the USS Missouri where the WWII surrender document was signed by Japan were highlights of the Hawaii tour enjoyed by twelve student cadets from the NJROTC unit at Apache Junction High School during Spring Break.
The cadets and chaperones were the guests of the military commands in Hawaii for a base orientation and historical tour. They left San Diego and flew to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii via Navy C-40 aircraft. While in Hawaii, they stayed at Bellows Air Force Base and visited Marine Corps Base Hawaii and the army at Fort DeRussey, along with some sightseeing.
Via C-130 aircraft, the group returned to San Diego where the Academic Team competed and the rest of the group cheered them on at the Western Championship Brain Brawl Competition on March 21.
This is the sixth group of NJROTC cadets that have been able to make the trip during spring break. According to NJROTC instructor Major Bill Parker, trips such as this, and another for younger cadets to San Diego, provide an opportunity for cadets to experience military life and have classroom instruction reinforced.
Funding for the airplane fares and miscellaneous expenses are raised during the year by the NJROTC unit members.

Kindergarten Registration Underway at AJUSD Schools
Registration for full-day Kindergarten classes being offered at all Apache Junction Unified School District elementary schools is currently underway. This is a concentrated spring effort to make sure that all families with children ready to enter kindergarten next year, that is, children five years old prior to September 1, 2009, get their children registered as soon as possible.
Because of budget cutbacks, many school districts are removing the all-day kindergarten opportunity or charging parents a fee for the extra hours of instruction past the traditional half-day session. The district had studied the extra charge option, but decided that this was not a viable plan. Therefore, the AJUSD full-day kindergarten will remain free of charge.
The free full day kindergarten class will be made available to students in neighboring school districts as well; they can obtain a variance for their child, but they will have to provide their own transportation to and from school.
Half-day kindergarten will still be held at certain district elementary schools for those who select this choice for their child.

Spring Testing Tips for Families
Students of all ages will be sharpening their pencils and settling in for several hours of testing during the first two weeks of April. The standardized tests are designed to gauge the individual students’ skills levels in reading, writing and mathematics and, on a larger basis, indicate how effectively the individual schools and teachers are doing their jobs.
Students need to do the best that they can on these tests, but cramming is not the answer. The best preparation for successful test taking is good school attendance all year and completing homework assignments on time. But, there are also some simple things parents can do to help:
· Talk to your child about testing and explain that it is simply one way that schools measure what children have learned. Tell them to just relax and do their best.
· The night before the test be certain that your child has a full night’s sleep.
· Be certain you child has something to eat before leaving for school. Children who are hungry do not test well.
· Also, if your child is ill, contact your school about a possible alternate date to take the test. Obviously a child who isn’t feeling well will not test well.
When you get the results of the test, go over them with your child. Use them to see where improvement is needed and do not compare one child’s test results with another’s. Keep the results and following next year’s round of tests, compare the two years to measure progress.

AJUSD Students Bring Home Honors
A number of Apache Junction Unified School District students have achieved particularly notable honors in recent weeks.
Apache Junction High School NJROTC cadet Sarah White has received notification that she has been selected to receive a $180,000 scholarship to attend the 4-year college of her choice under a special program for cadets nominated by Naval Science instructors.
Senior Naval Instructor Bill Parker commented, “Our local region received 10 scholarships for 60 schools and we are excited that Sarah was one of the ten picked.”
Sarah’s scholarship is the third $180,00 scholarship earned by AJHS NJROTC cadets this year, with seniors Presley Morrissey and Chance Carlson having already been awarded $180,000 four-year scholarships in December.
Heather Hadden, an eighth grade student at Thunder Mountain Middle School, has placed first in the state of Arizona with the essay that she wrote for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patriot’s Pen national writing contest. Her essay has now moved into competition at the national level. She was awarded $750 and a plaque for her state win.
The 17-member AJHS Student Council has been named a Council of Distinction for Arizona – an honor awarded to less than 10 schools in Arizona. According to teacher/sponsor Colleen MacCollum, this prestigious award is given to student councils who are highly performing in their schools, communities and the state at large.
The AJHS student council is composed of Natalie Donald, Chyna Gade, Justin Gage Williams, Lauren Stewart, Melinda DeMoss, Anthony Gallina, Nora Heilman, Rachel McKay, Biana Isaac, Katie Stout, Vivan Rajski, Diana Woodruff, Selby Williams, Rebecca Sanders, Taylor Harvey, Siobhan McKay and Erin Rankin.
Seventh grader Bryton Bobbit will be representing Desert Shadows Middle School at the State of Arizona Geography Bee held at Arizona State University on April 3. The competition is sponsored by National Geographic and Plum Creek Timber Co. Bryton said that he has always liked geography and that he is studying hard to in an effort to win a trip to the national competition in Washington, D.C. in May.

Free Full-Day Kindergarten Roundup Begins
Despite cutbacks on state funding, the board and administration of the AJUSD are moving ahead and will again be offering free full-day kindergarten for all interested students for the next school year – 2009-2010.
Chad Wilson, Associate Superintendent for Education Services, summed up the commitment by saying, “Educating children to the very best of our ability and preparing them for success upon graduation from high school is our mission - what we are all about. We know from research and experience that full day kindergarten is an important piece of that process.”
“Therefore, we will offer free full day kindergarten again next year to all children,” Wilson emphasized. “It is just too important to drop, despite the budget challenges.”
Because of budget cutbacks, many school districts are removing the all-day kindergarten opportunity or charging parents a fee for the extra hours of instruction past the traditional half-day session. The district had studied the extra charge option, but decided that this was not a viable plan.
And, with that announcement, the annual Kindergarten Roundup will be kicked off on March 23. This is a concentrated spring effort to make sure that all families with children ready to enter kindergarten next year, that is, children five years old prior to September 1, 2009, get their children registered as soon as possible. This is important so that specific planning for next year can begin in earnest.
The free full day kindergarten class will be made available to students in neighboring school districts as well; they can obtain a variance for their child, but they will have to provide their own transportation to and from school.
Half-day kindergarten will be still made available at certain district elementary schools for those who elect this choice for their child, Wilson said.
There is still debate on just how much benefit children derive from full day kindergarten. But the majority of research concludes that full-day kindergarten impacts positively on preparing children to learn reading and general academic achievement. It also is proven to improve social behavior and emotional maturity in youngsters.

AJUSD Offers ‘Free’ Full-day Kindergarten
When Kindergarten Roundup begins on Monday, March 23, unlike many Valley school districts, the Apache Junction Unified School District will offer a free, full-day kindergarten next year at all elementary schools. The issue of full state funding for this popular program has been, and still is, a question in the state legislature, causing a number of districts to announce charges for full-day program next year. AJUSD will not be among them.
“Full-day kindergarten is just good for kids,” explained Chad Wilson, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services at AJUSD. “Children are simply better prepared for first grade, and if we expect our children to excel, then it is up to us to provide them with the tools and the opportunity.”
Research indicates that students who attend a full-day kindergarten program benefit both academically and socially which positively effects later school performance. Full-day kindergarteners tend to develop an ability to learn independently, are more involved in classroom activity and interact well with others in their age group.
A half-day program will be available on some campuses for those families who prefer that approach, giving parents a choice in planning their child’s educational program.
Parents are encouraged to register their kindergarten age child during the District’s annual Kindergarten Roundup the week of March 23-27. Registration however, will continue through the first day of school on Wednesday, August 12, 2009. Registration will be conducted at all of the District’s elementary schools during regular school hours. If you do not know which school is considered your “home” school, please call 480-982-1110, ext. 2011. Boundary variances will be accepted for children living outside the District’s boundaries, however parents will have to provide transportation for those children.
To be eligible, a child must be 5 years of age prior to September 1, 2009. Parents are asked to bring the following documents to registration:
• Birth Certificate
• Proof of Residency (rent receipt, utility bill, etc)
• Immunization Record
For more information, call 480-982-1110, ext. 2011.

Summer Federal Free Lunch Program at AJUSD
The Apache Junction School District, in coordination with the Department of Agricultural Services and the Arizona State Department of Education, is once again offering the Summer Lunch Program - free nutritious meals for children 18 years of age or younger. Good nutrition is essential for maximizing children’s physical and social development during extended vacation periods as well as during the school year. This program is open to all children living in the area.
Unlike last year when the program was offered at four AJUSD schools, this year it will only be offered at one in spite of the fact six of the District’s nine schools were qualified. Desert Shadows Middle School at 801 E. Southern Ave. will be the site of the free lunch program this summer. Food Services Director Mona Barton explained that utility costs were the primary reason the decision was made to only offer the program at one of the qualified school sites.
Lunch service will begin Monday, June 1, and will continue Monday through Friday, through July 17. Children can be brought to the sites by parents or caretakers for the free lunches. Adult meals can also be purchased for $2.50 if the adult wishes to eat with the child/children.
Plan to combine the free lunch with other available activities. If children are participating in the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation “Open Gym” program at DSMS the children can have lunch there as well.
Lunch will be available at Thunder Mountain Middle School as well, but because TMMS does not qualify for the Federal lunch program, lunch there will be available from an ala carte menu to those participating in the “Open Gym” held at that school. Lunch items will be reasonably priced.

‘Rattlesnakes: Myths and Realities’ is March 16 ALS Topic
Rattlesnakes provoke fear in hikers, pet owners and anyone living in urban areas bordering on the desert. Some of this misunderstanding and fear are due to the public’s general lack of factual information about venomous reptiles.
Charles Rau, a biologist, naturalist, researcher and photographer, hopes to remedy this situation on Monday evening, March 16, at 7 p.m. when he discusses both the facts and fiction surrounding rattlesnakes as part of the Arizona Lecture Series.
Pre-sale individual tickets to this lecture are currently available at the cost of $5.00 in the Community Services Office of the Apache Junction Unified School District located in the Administrative Building at the corner of Southern Ave. and Ironwood Drive.
The lecture programs are presented every Monday evening until April 6. Location is the Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the campus of Apache Junction High School, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive. Curtain rises at 7 p.m.

AJUSD Aligned with Auditor Recommendations
Apache Junction Unified School District (AJUSD) was recently selected, in accordance with state law, by the Arizona Auditor General to receive a Performance Audit. This audit is designed to assist public school districts in strengthening their operations by comparing their financial information with similar-sized school districts in Arizona. Selection is at random.
AJUSD Associate Superintendent Jim Lockwood said, "We welcome the opportunity for others to review our operations and make suggestions, some of which we have already implemented."
The audit report, which can be found at the AZ Auditor General’s web site, reviewed and compared financial information in six areas: Administration; Student Transportation; Plant Operation and Management; Proposition 301 Monies; Classroom Dollars; and the English Language Learners Program.
In the first three categories, the report indicated that, comparatively, AJUSD spent more overall dollars in these areas, but not because of higher salaries, but due to having more clerical support positions.
The comparison was most pronounced in the area of transportation where AJUSD buses travel almost 2.5 times the amount of daily route miles travelled than in comparably sized districts. Despite this, AJUSD’s cost per mile was still lower than the average cost per miles of the districts compared.
In the area of custodial, maintenance and grounds, costs were also slightly higher than comparably sized districts, mainly due to comparatively higher staffing levels. The report also noted AJUSD had considerably more grassy areas for students which results in higher costs for maintenance and utilities. Grass has been removed at several sites and staffing reduced.
Administratively, overall costs were slightly higher than comparably sized districts due, again, to having more clerical staff rather than salaries being too high. AJUSD has reduced positions in this area with remaining employees absorbing additional duties beyond those originally assigned.
