RUSSELL DEMERY TO TEACH ROPING AT THE  DAY OF THE COWBOY KID’S KORRAL

Roping even a Straw Calf isn’t as easy as it looks but thanks to twelve year old Cowboy Russell Demery young cowpokes at the Pinal Co. National Day of the Cowboy at Goldfield will have a good chance at it.

Russell will be the Straw Calf Wrangler at the Day of the Cowboy’s KID’S KORRAL sponsored by Twin City Federal Bank.  Russell is the nephew of Robbie DeLong, owner of Hoof’s Veterinarian Supply & Feed in Apache Junction with Cowboying in the family’s blood.  He has worked cattle, set fence and helped break in horses since he could swing a rope and is eager to teach his technique to any young buckaroos who would like to try a hand at it.

Alongside the Straw Calf Roping, the KID’S KORRAL will offer Stick Horse Racing, Mustache and Face Painting, Games, Storytelling and Prizes as well as a refreshing splash under the Goldfield Water Tower.  Activities are supervised by volunteers from the Apache Junction Parks & Recreation Dept. as well as the Boys & Girls Club of Apache Junction.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 25th and the Pinal Co. National Day of the Cowboy at Goldfield (5 miles north of Apache Junction on #88) from 9:00am – 5:00pm for a complete day of Frontier Adventure.  With Parade, Gunfights, Mustache Contest, Western Art Show, Re-enactments and (2) full stages of Western Entertainment there is something for the Cowboy/Cowgirl in all of you.  Free Admission / $2.00 per car parking donation requested.

National Day of the Cowboy

Giddy up folks, there’s a celebration comin’.  That’s right, it’s time for the Pinal County National Day of the Cowboy festivities.  Northeast Pinal County Economic Partnership (NEPEP) is stepping up again this year to sponsor the big event.  Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, Superior and various Pinal County towns will host visitors and locals.

The National Day of the Cowboy was sanctioned by the federal government in 2005 and promoted by nine states to start with.  Arizona was the first to get a celebration going honoring and recognizing the contribution cowboys and cowgirls have made and continue to make in our western culture.

There’s a heap of fun bein’ planned for this year’s commotion.  Friday night starts off with a bang with the Saloon Casino Night at the big white tent at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort sponsored by those tireless do-gooders, Superstition Search & Rescue.  Try your luck at the tables, listen to true country music and see some of the best dancin’ gals this side of the Rockies.  Watch out for the gunslingers when you’re playin’ Poker.  You don’t want to go and get yourself hurt.

A shotgun start golf tournament starts off Saturday bright and early.  Then there’s a humdinger of a BBQ lunch at the Resort, Open Range or Firehouse Grill that’ll tide you over until evening.  SRP’s Second Shift puts it in gear about 6:30 that evening at GCGR,
to keep your toes tappin’ while you’re enjoyin’ dinner at your choice of locations including The Ledge (for the best view), Kokopelli’s and The Grill (if you can’t take the heat) and on the lawn at the driving range (if you love being out under the stars) with a BBQ dinner or The Firehouse Grill or Open Range BBQ & Deli.

If Texas thinks they do things in a big way.  They ain’t seen nothin’ if they havent’ been to the Gold Canyon Golf Resort “Fireworks over Gold Canyon” display.  Yes, siree, the most amazing spectacle to come to town since last year. Gold, silver, red, green and blue all sparkling against the backdrop of dark skies and twinkling stars.

Superstition Museum has a whole list of events to tickle your fancy including talented musicians, authors, craftsmen specializing in leather carving, sterling silver engraving, and packing burrows for trips in the mountains.  They’ll have food and music and fun stuff for the little cowpokes.  Get your family lined up for a good old western tintype photo at Madam Marilyn’s too.

When you eat lunch or dinner at Chen’s Chinese Bistro in the Bashas’ center in Gold Canyon, you have a chance to be entered into a raffle for some dandy prizes drawn during National Day of the Cowboy.  The more  you eat at Chen’s, the better your chances of winning great prizes like Two Nights at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort or Two Rounds of Golf at GCGR.
Foy all you tinhorns out there, the High stakes Poker Tournament will be goin on at the Views at Superstition. Gona have a Texas Holdum game Saturday with Wyatt, Doc and the gang.  Gona be some good vittles, lots of Redeye and watch the fireworks from the patio.

National Day of the Cowboy is a major highlight of the summer, bringing visitors into our community to enjoy and celebrate our western heritage.  Let’s do it up right.  Get involved in some way.  You’ll meet new people have a great time and learn a bit about the Old West right here in our back yard.  Julian and Lucy King would be amazed, wouldn’t they?

For additional information contact John Enright 480-288-5981 jtegoldcanyon@yahoo.com or Susan Sharp, GCGR 480-671-5589 susan@gcgr.com

PUT AWAY THE RAZOR and GET READY FOR THE EARP-HOLLIDAY MUSTACHE CONTEST
In the 1800’s gents admired a good mustache and the boys who sported exceptional ones were known as “real Whiskerinos.”

On July 25th, 2009, Miss Trixie Rose and the Beautiful Bordello Girls of Goldfield will be seeking the Best Whiskerinos in the Territories for the Pinal Co. National Day of the Cowboy’s Earp-Holliday Mustache Contest!

Prizes are awarded for the longest, lushest and most authentic 19th century mustaches & beards so now’s the time to start working on one that will catch Ms. Trixie’s attention!  Last year, with over two dozen entries, the Ladies had their work cut out for them but they weren’t complaining.  “We see some real good looking gentleman” Trixie said of the past two years Mustache Contests.  “You’all just keep bringing then on!”

The Earp-Holliday Mustache Contest is just one of the many events scheduled for the Pinal County National Day of the Cowboy on Saturday, July 25th between 9:00am and 5:00pm at Goldfield Ghost Town – 5 miles north of downtown Apache Junction on #88.

For more information concerning the Earp-Holliday Mustache Contest  or National Day of the Cowboy events call the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce at 480-982-3141 or email ajchambermembers@qwestoffice.net.

AT THE PINAL NATIONAL DAY OF THE COWBOY
Pinal County is the site of the largest National Day of the Cowboy Celebration in the country.  Set aside by the U.S. Congress in 2005 “In honor of the many contributions of American Cowboys & Cowgirls to the National Identity and Way of Life”, this year the official date falls on July 25th with four Pinal County Communities offering coordinated events throughout the weekend.

Apache Junction’s offering – The 1890’s Cow Town Festival at Goldfield Ghost Town -  will have special attraction to young cowpokes everywhere.  Among the many activities is the KIDS KORRAL – sponsored by Twin Cities Federal and supervised by the Apache Junction Parks & Recreation Dept. aided by the Boys & Girls Club of Apache Junction.

With Straw Calf Roping, Stick Horse Racing, Mustache Painting, Tall Tales & Storytelling, Games and frequent visits from the NDOC Rodeo Queens and resident Desperados, it is the perfect place for the kids to have fun while their parents mosey on down to try their hands at the Fast Draw or perhaps a quick visit to the Mammoth Saloon.

Aspiring Cowpoke Poets (ages 5-12) are encouraged to submit their cowboy poetry to the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 1747, Apache Junction, AZ 85217 prior to July 1st.  Selected poets will be invited on stage with Diane Merrill and the Spirit of the Frontier Cowgirl Poets for a public reading of their work.

Goldfield is an authentic 19th century ghost town located 5 miles north of downtown Apache Junction on Hwy #88.  Gates open at 9:00am on Saturday, July 25th for a full day of frontier adventure.  Admission is free with a $2.00 per car parking pass.
Call 480-982-3141 or visit http://www.apachejunctiontoday.com or http://www.goldcanyontoday.com  for complete information and schedules of events.

One of the many attributes of the Cowboy was how readily they lent a helping hand.
In that spirit the PINAL NATIONAL DAY OF THE COWBOY has responded to the call of Lt. General John Bradley (Ret.) and troops currently serving in Afghanistan with their BLANKETS FOR AFGHAN ORPHANS campaign.

Winter in Afghanistan is only short months away and among the many needs of those caring for war orphans is warm blankets – an item that sits largely unused in many Arizona closets.

We would like to encourage all “Friends of the Cowboys” to also be Friends of the Afghan Children and bring a new or (in good condition) used blanket to the Goldfield site of the Pinal Co. National Day of the Cowboy on July 25th to be left at the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce booth.  They will be collected at the end of the day and shipped off to the agencies responsible for distribution.

Please bear in mind that many children’s blankets are decorated with images that are unsuitable to Afghanistan’s culture ( cartoon pigs, Barbie or Bratz dolls or religious themes for instance).  We ask that you avoid donations of blankets with such images so your generosity may reach as many children as possible.

For those with questions please call the Chamber at 480-982-3141 or write the Blankets for Afghan Children’s representative,  Ray Houser at houserray@aol.com

CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION and PINAL COUNTY SUPERVISORS ENDORCE THE NATIONAL DAY OF THE COWBOY

At their June 16th Council Meeting the City of Apache Junction issued a formal proclamation setting aside the 25th of July as the Pinal County National Day of the Cowboy.  Signed by Mayor John Insalaco and presented to Chairman Kevin Thompson of the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce, this Proclamation compliments that issued by the Pinal County Board of Supervisors on June 3rd.  Both recognize the “many contributions made by Cowboys and Cowgirls to their communities and their major contributions to our national identity and way of life.”

The National Day of the Cowboy was created by United States Senate Resolution in 2005 and has since been joined by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Governors of several States (including Arizona) in encouraging the celebration of the nation’s Western heritage.   As host to the largest National Day of the Cowboy celebration in the country, it is appropriate that its County Government and largest community are recognized as top “Friends of the Cowboy.”

The Pinal County National Day of the Cowboy will be celebrated over the weekend of July 24-25th in four separate Pinal communities – Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, Superior and Queen Creek with dozens of activities in each.  For schedules of events or other information visit http://www.apachejunctiontoday.com. http://www.ajnews.com , http://www.newszap.com , http://www.apachejunctioncoc.com  or phone 480-982-3141.

APACHE JUNCTION CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
PINAL COUNTY NATIONAL DAY OF THE COWBOY

PNDOC ENTERTAINMENT

When you visit the P.T. BARNUM ENTERTAINMENT EMPORIUM at this years Pinal County national Day of the Cowboy at Goldfield, you might almost confuse it with Branson!  Sponsored by the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, nearly a dozen acts will be on stage with something for everyone!

PIONEER PEPPER & THE SUNSET PIONEERS:  Arizona’s most popular Singing Cowboy headlines as he takes the stage with his award winning Pioneers!
He rides the same musical trail as Gene Autry, Roy Rodgers, Marty Robbins and the Sons of the Pioneers with plenty of joshing & corn poke comedy along the way.
One AM and one PM performance.

DENNIS LEASE WITH PAYDIRT:  Dennis and Paydirt play the Classics of the 80’s.  That’s 1880’s folks!  Dennis’s fiddle wanders from playing at a Settler’s barn dance to the folk songs & fiddle tunes from old Appalachia while Paydirt trots right beside with harmony and strumming guitars.  This is what cowboys really listened to while lying around the campfire.   AM & PM Performances.

WHISTLING GARY TREXLER:  Gary specializes in Cowboy Crooning with a 1930’s Depression era attitude.  He’ll be appearing on stage at the Emporium as well as mid town on the Gallows Stage.

“A CHAT WITH THE DUKE”  John Anderson appearing as the great John Wayne:  John Anderson brings The Duke back to life with stories of the legendary actor’s movies, life and mannerisms.

PROFESSOR MARVEL’S PATENT MEDICINE SHOW:  In his best southern “Foghorn Leghorn” accent, Professor Marvel will perform medical miracles (and hopefully avoid being tarred and feathered) with his homemade snake oil concoctions and razzle-dazzle sales pitches.
THE HISTORICAL FOUNDATION OF COWGIRLS
COWGIRL FASHION SHOW & REVUE:  The internationally famous Historical Foundation of Cowgirls returns to show us why they remain the most popular Cowgirls in the World!  Dazzling costumes, trick roping, line dancing and some darned pretty women!

DRILL & POLISH BY THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS OF THE AZ TERRITORIES:
The African American  Buffalo Soldiers were the backbone of the U.S. Military during not only the Apache Wars but the Spanish American War as well!  This renowned re-enactment group will demonstrate that the discipline and spirit of the Buffalo Soldiers remains alive and well.
RADIOZONA:  Relive your grandfather’s (even great-grandfathers) days when the Old West was only as far away as your radio!  In past years RadioZona has brought us radio plays featuring Billy the Kid and the first ever episode of Gunsmoke.  They are keeping this year’s re-broadcast a secret but you can bet it will be good!  RadioZona appears for (2) shows in the air conditioned Church on the Mount.

DIANE MERRILL & THE SPIRIT OF THE FRONTIER COWGIRL POETS: Diane has taken the reins from the absent Doc Jordon this year as our featured Cowgirl Poet while the Spirit of the Frontier is whichever of her poet friends that happen to be handy.  Diane will also invite on stage the winners of our 2009 Young Cowpoke Poets Contest for a public reading.  Appearing for (2) shows in the air conditioned Church on the Mount.

COL.  TRAVIS GREEN & HIS ONE MAN WILD WEST SHOW:  The Col. is an ace up the sleeve, tall tale telling gambler with hands that shuffle a deck as fast as they can pull a derringer from his vest pocket.  Don’t catch his eye!  He might well select you as a volunteer for his Knife Throwing act!

The Pinal County National Day of the Cowboy at Goldfield Ghost Town is scheduled for Saturday, July 25th between 9:00am – 5:00pm.  Admission to all events and entertainment is free but a $2.00 per car parking donation is requested.

Goldfield is approx. 5 miles north of downtown Apache Junction on Hwy #88 (The Historic Apache Trail.)  For a complete listing of events and schedules call the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce at 480-982-3141, email ajchambermembers@qwestoffice.net or visit http://www.apachejunctiontoday.com  or http://www.ajnews.com.

Back round Information
In 2005 the United States Senate created the National Day of the Cowboy thru United States Senate Resolution #138, setting aside the fourth weekend in July as a day “In honor of the American Cowboy & Cowgirl and acknowledging their many contributions to our National Identity and Way of Life.” Since then, former President Bush, the United States House of Representatives and the Governors of several States (former Gov. Napolitano being the first) have ratified the NDOC with their own proclamations.

In 2007 the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce instituted the first Pinal County National Day of the Cowboy, hosted at Goldfield Ghost Town with an attendance of 3500.  Joined by the cities of Gold Canyon, Superior and Florence and coordinated by the N.E. Pinal Economic Partnership, in 2008 the collective events drew well over 12,000 attendees – making it the largest National Day of the Cowboy celebration in the nation.
