GLENDALE FIRE TO LOWER ITS FLAGS IN OBSERVANCE OF FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS

(GFD) GLENDALE, AZ. – The Glendale Fire Department, in observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, will lower its flags to half-staff on Sunday, October 5, 2008. By lowering the U.S. flags at each Glendale Fire Station, we recognize the brave men and women who died protecting their communities from natural and manmade emergencies and disasters and those who carry on the proud tradition of the fire service.

On October 16, 2001, President George W. Bush approved legislation requiring the U.S. flag to be lowered to half-staff on all Federal buildings to memorialize fallen firefighters. Public Law 107-51 required this action to occur annually in conjunction with observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. “Everyday firefighters across the Nation are making a conscious decision when they put their protective gear on the truck that they may lose their lives while serving their community,” said Glendale Fire Chief Mark Burdick. “Without doubt firefighters constantly train and in doing so make the decision to not die during emergencies but unfortunately it happens from time to time due to the dangers of this job,” Burdick continued. “We pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” Chief Burdick added.
