A dazzling piano concert by Nicole Pesce entertained residents of The Forum at Desert Harbor, a Five Star Quality Care Community. The 27-year-old pianist tickled the ivories (and Forum fans) with a delightful variety of musical styles that seamlessly segued from pop and jazz, to classical and swing.
The master pianist has been playing by heart since the young age of 14, which earned her appearances with Jerry Lewis and Debbie Reynolds. A resident of Phoenix, Pesce performs locally at My Florist Café, along with a 10-year engagement as key pianist for The Ritz-Carlton.
Pesce proved that “I’ve Got Rhythm” as her medley of melodies brought music to the ears of residents at The Forum at Desert Harbor. Cheers of “Bravo” rang out as she played the well-recognized song, “Happy Birthday to You,” backwards. Then for the icing on the cake, Pesce spun classical interpretations of “Happy Birthday” in the styles of such classical composers as Mozart and Beethoven.
With a repertoire of more than 10,000 memorized pieces, she swung from requests for Duke Ellington’s “Satin Doll,” to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera.
Seamlessly picking up the pace, Pesce kept toe-tapping residents “In the Mood” for the 1940s with the swinging sounds of Glenn Miller, Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. Her finale of “The Flight of the Bumblebee” sweetly zipped along in a honey-of-a-rendition that had residents buzzing about this extraordinary pianist.
“That was the most wonderful treat,” applauded 99-year-old resident, Dodie Haynes. Resident Bonnie Feldman agreed, “That was phenomenal.”
Echoing their sentiments, 16-year resident Edna Anderson told Pesce, “I have never heard anything as good as this.” Quite a compliment, since Anderson turns 103 years old on Christmas Eve.
