Thunderbird Retirement Resort in Glendale, in partnership with their Tucson-based management company, Watermark Retirement Communities, launched a resident orientation for Watermark University on June 4. Residents lined up to enroll in a wide variety of brain and body fitness classes available in Thunderbird’s Summer 2009 Watermark University Course Catalog.
“Watermark University is all about bringing together residents and associates to stimulate their minds and strengthen their bodies,” announced Kristi Roberts, executive director of Thunderbird Retirement Resort. “Associates will participate alongside residents teaching and enrolling in a combination of brain and body fitness classes.
“Tour the tables and see what everyone’s teaching through August 2009,” said Roberts as she pointed out the room filled with Watermark University faculty eager to enroll students in the courses. “The first semester is reserved for residents of Thunderbird, but we’ll open classes to the public in the Fall. If you have suggestions, or family or friends who want to get involved, let us know.”
Residents toured from table-to-table inquiring about the Watermark University courses that piqued their interest. The director of the Thunderbird Kitchen Band, Judy Guarino, encouraged attendees to join the band. Ron Harrold, director of operations, showed residents his 1946 Ford as he recruited for his class, “4 the Love of Hot Rodz.”
“We’re starting a book club-style class called ‘Bookends,’” explained the book discussion group leader Debbie Einstman, who serves as housekeeping supervisor and administrative assistant for maintenance.
Thunderbird Retirement Resort resident, Margaret “Peggy” Kuula, enrolled in the Bookends course just before she enrolled in Russian Language, taught by Russian-born business office director Anton Akilov.
“It’s very basic Russian,” Akilov said of the language class that will also offer insights into the culture. “We’ll start with numbers, letters, ‘good morning,’ ‘hi’ and ‘bye.’ No grammar.”
“I’m excited about both classes. I love to read so I enrolled in Bookends, and I know I can pronounce the Russian words, because I speak Spanish,” Kuula said as she echoed a word in Russian spoken by her new instructor. “I want excitement of learning something that keeps the brain cells going.”
Food and beverage director Joe Aiello had students pouring over his upcoming Wine Tasting and Healthy Summer Eats demonstrations. Aiello said, “Watermark University, is an incredibly great program, and gives us all an opportunity to learn and grow together.”
Watermark University courses will be featured ongoing at Thunderbird Retirement Resort. A new course catalog will be open to the public in the Fall 2009. For those with a passion for teaching and/or enrolling in mind-expanding and body-strengthening classes, contact Linda Wiley at 602-588-1496.
