ELK RIVER, Minn.—SolarAttic, Inc. has announced the company realized a marked increase in sales of its attic-based solar pool heater during 2007. The increase was meaningful to SolarAttic because the pool industry experienced a dramatic decline in sales during the same period. This industry-wide decline was reported as high as 50 percent in some markets, according to Pool & Spa News, a leading industry magazine, in its December 2007 edition.
Ed Palmer, SolarAttic’s president, said: “High energy costs are causing pool owners to seek innovative and alternative new ways of heating their swimming pool. During 2007, SolarAttic experienced a 40 percent increase of Internet traffic seeking solar pool heater information. These pool owners were specifically attracted to the idea of a solar pool heater that did not use roof-mounted solar panels. As higher energy costs continue to wage war on our pocketbooks, we expect a record-breaking year in 2008.

“According to a recent news report in Tampa Bay, Fla., one family is experiencing a savings of $240-$340 per month by using our attic solar pool heater instead of a pool heat pump they had previously installed. Part of this homeowner’s savings was realized from reduced air conditioning costs, because as the SolarAttic solar pool heater heats the pool, it also cools the house. The SolarAttic solar pool heater often results in a net reduction in overall utility costs because of these new energy dynamics. That is taking all the heat out of the attic and putting it to good use by heating the swimming pool.”

SolarAttic has patented technology that recovers solar heat from attics to heat swimming pools. How it works is easy to understand. The existing pool pump sends the pool water to a simple air-to-liquid heat exchanger located in the attic. The heat exchanger design eliminates the condenser and chemicals commonly found in heat pumps. As a result, the unit operates at 1/10th the monthly costs when compared to a heat pump. A fan pulls the hot attic air across a water coil, heating up the pool water. By utilizing the heat from the attic, the home cools down, causing less demand on the air conditioner. The pool owner gets free solar energy without having to use solar roof panels. SolarAttic’s breakthrough technology is now heating pools in more than 40 states om the United States, and in Canada, England, New Zealand and South Africa.
