[size= ]"Everyday Heroes" student of the year finalists
[size=PHOENIX][size=]– Cox Communications and the Arizona Interscholastic Association have selected 10 Arizona high school students as finalists for student of the year as part of their 2008 Everyday Heroes awards. One male and one female winner will be announced at the black-tie gala at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix on May 17. The entire show will be broadcast statewide live on Cox 7 at 7 p.m.
The student of the year award recognizes the student achievers who most exemplify sportsmanship and a healthy lifestyle. The finalists will each receive $500 and the winners will get $2,000.
Two of the ten finalists are from Mesa. They are:
Mary Massey
Ø Age: 18
Ø Hometown: Mesa, Ariz.
Ø School: Mountain View High School, Mesa
Ø Activities: Cross country captain, track distance team, Spanish Club, Toro Link Crew, National Honor Society member, mentor for struggling sophomores and English Language Learner tutor
Ø Community Service: Banner Mesa Medical Center volunteer, United Food Bank volunteer, Paz de Cristo volunteer, church youth camp leader and Spanish Club volunteer
Ø Nominated by: David Hines, Athletic Director
Ø Additional Information: Youth Womanhood Recognition Award (church), Honor Roll each year of high school
Adam Crotty
Ø Age: 18
Ø Hometown: Mesa, Ariz.
Ø School: Mountain View High School, Mesa
Ø Activities: Track and field captain, football, National Honor Society, Eagle Scout and Toro Link Leaders
Ø Community Service: Eagle Scout projects (refurbish rundown apartments and clean up desert wildlife areas), Mesa Public Library volunteer and Spanish Salvation Army Center volunteer
Ø Nominated by: David Hines, Athletic Director
Ø Additional Information: National Honor Society, Senator John McCain’s principle nomination to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and appointed for the class of 2012 NROTC Scholarship
