For the period of April 16-29, Mesa Fire Department units east of Greenfield Road responded to 547 Emergency Medical Service calls and 179 fire-related calls. There were three calls where patients were transported by medical helicopters to area hospitals.
1) Motorcycle accident
A 40-year-old man was in a motorcycle accident April 16 in the 9000 block of East University Drive and was taken by helicopter to an area hospital. Firefighter-paramedics were called at 7:10 a.m.
2) Motorcycle crash
A man, 27, injured in a motorcycle accident April 17 in the 8200 block of East Baseline Road, was taken by helicopter to an area hospital. Firefighter-paramedics were called at 6:17 p.m.
3) Child fell
A girl, 2, who fell less than 10 feet and was injured April 27 in the 2800 block of South Piedra Circle, was taken by helicopter to Maricopa Medical Center. Firefighter-paramedics were called at 5:14 p.m.
4) Mattress fire
A mattress against an exterior light caught fire, causing $1,000 in damages April 18 in the 8700 block of East Carol Avenue. A neighbor jumped a fence and extinguished the fire with a garden hose. Mesa Fire officials checked for fire extensions and removed smoke from the attic. Firefighter-paramedics were called at 9:45 p.m.
5) Dumpster fire
A fire caused $150 in damages to a $1,200 Dumpster April 21 in the 100 block of North 74th Street. Firefighter-paramedics, who were called at 5:48 p.m., used a one-and-a-half-inch hose and tank water to extinguish the flames.
6) Trailer fire
A fire in a single-wide trailer caused $80,000 in damages April 29 in the 1900 block of South 78th Place. Firefighter-paramedics were called at 1 p.m.
