PHOENIX MERCURY TEAMS UP WITH NONPROFIT SAVE THE FAMILY FOR A FAST BREAK TO READING
Forward/Center Tangela Smith to donate books and read with kids
WHAT: Phoenix Mercury forward/center Tangela Smith is teaming up with local nonprofit Save the Family, the Valley’s Family Crisis Center, to help raise awareness and funding for literacy through the 2009 Fast Break to Reading program. The 2009 Fast Break To Reading program encourages youth nationwide to read throughout the summer and track their minutes online. The goal is for the youth to collectively reach one million minutes of reading time.
To introduce the national literacy program, the Mercury are holding a Reading Timeout with youth from the Save the Family organization on Saturday, June 20 at 8:30 a.m. Smith and Scorch will be on hand to read one of their favorite children’s books and answer questions about the book with the children.
Youth participating in the program will receive one of 16 collectible bookmarks autographed by a WNBA player each week when they enter their reading minutes at the Fast Break To Reading Web site. The Web site also features WNBA players’ favorite books, a player Q&A section and polls about reading.
