Local Thrift Store is robbed for a second time at an estimated cost to nonprofit of $1500

Mesa, Monday, June 22nd, 2009.

Save the Family Thrift Store was burglarized Saturday night, costing local nonprofit, Save the Family an estimated $1500 in damages.  This is the second time the store has been broken in to in the last few months.  Glass will need to be replaced and registers were broken beyond repair.  In addition, the thieves stole electronics and costume jewelry.

The Save the Family Thrift Store is operated by Save the Family Foundation of Arizona.  The merchandise in the store is donated from the local community and re-sold to generate revenue to support the operations of the agency.  The store is entirely run by volunteers and the income is much needed, especially in light of a recent decline in monetary contributions.

“I think this latest break-in is probably another sign of the times.  People are desperate and if it means stealing from a nonprofit they will do so to take care of themselves.  Poverty has hit the Valley hard and Mesa is no exception.  We currently have 42 families on our waiting list looking to enter our program.  We are struggling to meet the needs and I know we are not alone, “  Andrea Sok, Director of Community Relations for Save the Family.

Save the Family (http://www.savethefamily.org) provides transitional housing and case management services to more than 300 families a year.  With more than 160 housing units serving homeless families with children throughout the Valley, Save the Family is changing the face of homelessness one family at a time.  Through programs like Career Development and domestic violence and parenting classes, clients in Save the Family’s program learn to become both economically and emotionally self-sufficient.

MISSION STATEMENT:  We help children in homeless families by treating the whole family with programs to break the negative cycles of poverty, abuse and homelessness.  We strengthen the Valley’s communities by facilitating their transition to self-sufficiency.
