One-fourth of all work-related injuries suffered in 2007 by workers in Maricopa County were back strains or sprains, according to SCF Arizona, the state’s largest provider of workers’ compensation insurance.
SCF Loss Control Director Claudia Baker will share the data and discuss other common injuries and their causes during her “State of Workplace Safety in Maricopa County” address at the annual Safety Works Expo, May 6-7, at the Black Canyon Conference Center, 9440 N. 25th Ave., Phoenix.
Following Baker on the May 7 agenda will be City of Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, who will discuss the relationship of workplace safety and business growth.
The local chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers co-sponsors the event, which takes place in Phoenix for the first time. Safety Works is designed for safety professionals, employers and their employees.
The two-day educational event includes class sessions covering Arizona’s response to potential terrorism; maximizing workplace safety training; human error reduction; establishing a modified work program; legal issues when filing a workers’ compensation claim; slips, trips and falls, fire extinguisher training; accident investigation; behavior based safety and much more.
Workers also can enroll in classes that will let them earn their Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s 10-hour certifications in either construction or general industry.
More than 30 suppliers of workplace safety products will exhibit and demonstrate their equipment and services.
Doors open at 7 a.m. both days. A continental breakfast and lunch are offered each day. Cost is $89. For information or to register, call 602.631.2002 or visit http://www.scfaz.com.
