Palo Cristi Presbyterian Church of Paradise Valley will dedicate a Peace Pole on the grounds of the church during their services on Sunday, June 7, 2009.  The public is invited to attend.  Services begin at 9:30 a.m.; Palo Cristi is located at 3535 East Lincoln Drive.

Peace Poles are a part of the International Peace Pole Project and involves installing a pole bearing the prayer “may peace prevail on earth,” in different languages, on the sides of the pole. ]Palo Cristi’s handmade redwood pole will be “planted” to express our desire to see peace prevail between Israel and the Palestinians.   The peace pole will feature Hebrew, Arabic and English.  The fourth side features handprints of children from Palo Cristi.

Palo Cristi has been actively involved in peacemaking activities in Phoenix and throughout Arizona. ]Pastor Debra Avery said, “At Palo Cristi, the biblical mandate to be peacemakers is not something we leave for others to do.  We have signed our denomination's Commitment to Peacemaking and have sought a variety of ways to make that commitment come alive.  The Peace Pole is a visible sign of our commitment and our hope that one day, God's peace will truly come for all people.”

Cristi Church also participates in a variety of other community outreach programs including Family Promise (homeless family sheltering program), Habitat for Humanity, and serving homebound seniors.

Since 1967, the Presbyterian Church has affirmed the rights of Israelis and Palestinians to live in safe and secure borders.  In addition, the Presbyterian Church advocates the end of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem while calling on Israelis and Palestinians to cease violence.

Peace Pole Background
The Peace Pole Project started in Japan in 1955 by Masahisa Goi, who dedicated his life to spreading the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” after World War II. Peace poles are handcrafted monuments erected the world over as international symbols of peace.

There are more than 250,000 Peace Poles in nearly every country in the world. They are located in simple places, such as churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and gardens and extraordinary ones, such as the North Pole and the Pyramids in Egypt.

World Week for Peace in Palestine Israel
World Week for Peace has been organized by the World Council of Churches.  Member churches and related organizations are invited to join a week of advocacy and action for a just peace in Palestine and Israel.
