Central Del. Unitarian Universalists to ponder change
DOVER — The Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware invite everyone to worship with them on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, when the Rev. Lyn Oglesby will present "How Can We Hope to Change the World if We Don’t Change Ourselves?" Change can be frustrating, and it can be exhilarating. We often hear ourselves wishing that people or things were different. Change is a double-edged sword. It’s hard to adjust to and it’s hard for us to initiate and manage effectively. But there are certain ways of thinking that can help us to transform ourselves and transform the world.
The Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware conduct services in Congregation Beth Sholom’s building, 340 N. Queen St., Dover, at 11 a.m. every Sunday. Child care and children’s religious education are provided. All are welcome! For more information, call 233-7754 or visit uucd.org.

Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware to learn about the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations
DOVER — The Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware invite everyone to worship with them on Sunday, Oct. 4, when the Rev. Lyn Oglesby, the congregation’s new minister, presents "Association Sunday: Whither the UUA and So what?" The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, known also as the UUA, has multiple roles and responsibilities that serve (and sometimes pain) the denomination’s congregations. On Association Sunday, they honor the many services the UUA provides for them. They make a special contribution to the UUA, and talk about the need for such a "bureaucracy" and how it serves the individual congregations and Unitarian Universalism. In brief, is the UUA a blessing, an anchor or a channel for a new future?

Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware welcome new minister DOVER – Wendy Pickett, president of the Board of Trustees for the Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware, is pleased to announce that the Rev. Lyn Oglesby, of Washington, D.C., has been chosen to serve as the newly formed congregation’s first minister.
“What an honor it is to come to the capital of the first state as the first Unitarian Universalist minister to serve an energetic and exciting congregation that draws people from neighboring areas as well as Dover!” said the Rev. Oglesby. “We are an inclusive group who welcome all, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, abilities, gender or sexual identity. If you are looking for a spiritual home that encourages free thinking while it builds on historic religious traditions, you will blossom in our congregation! I love Dover already – people are ever so friendly. And the peaches, tomatoes and farm-fresh vegetables are out of this world!”
The Rev. Oglesby will conduct her first service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, in Congregation Beth Sholom’s building, 340 N. Queen St., Dover, where UUCD services are held every Sunday. All are invited and welcome. The Rev. Oglesby will speak on “Surviving Uncertainty: Creating a Meaningful Future.” Child care will be provided, and parents can register children and youth for regular Sunday-school classes.
The Rev. Lyn Oglesby moved to Washington in 1956 to work for Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson when he was Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate. She worked in politics and government, and lived in Japan, India and Nepal as the spouse of a Foreign Service officer. She earned a master’s degree and a doctorate, served as a religious-education director and worked as an independent consultant before studying to become a Unitarian Universalist minister. A 2005 graduate of Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, the Rev. Oglesby interned in Lancaster, Pa., and served as minister at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Shreveport, La. This past year, the Rev. Oglesby has served the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore as their interim minister.
As a Unitarian Universalist minister, the Rev. Oglesby has been a leader in interfaith collaboration and social-justice work. While she served as minister in Shreveport, the congregation worked hard on relief for Hurricane Katrina evacuees, and advocated for justice for the “Jena Six.” The Rev. Oglesby travels frequently to India to visit ancient Buddhist sites and to study with Buddhist scholars associated with Thich Nhat Hanh and His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. She will share these experiences in programs sponsored by UUCD.
More on Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware
The Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware opened for public service in April 2008, the culmination of more than two years of work by a small group of dedicated founding members, with the assistance and support of neighboring congregations in Wilmington, Newark and Lewes, and the Joseph Priestly District of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Since opening, services have been led by guest ministers from around the region, lay leaders and an intern minister. The Rev. Oglesby brings fresh enthusiasm and energetic commitment to building a better world to UUCD’s growing congregation and the Dover area.
Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware is a newly formed congregation of individuals and families who are building a community that promotes a liberal approach to religious and spiritual nourishment through worship, education and celebration. Unitarian Universalist congregations are bound by common principles, rather than a creed or dogma, and encourage the pursuit of a personal religious vision, a commitment to social justice and to building a “beloved community.”
At her second service, on Sunday, Sept. 20, the Rev. Oglesby and the UUCD congregation will celebrate the Water Communion service, a traditional service in the Unitarian Universalist faith. This special service will be held at the Dover City Park on White Oak Road., at 11 a.m., and all are welcome to attend.

Is there such a thing as good death?
DOVER — The Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware are sponsoring a community adult education event, "Is There Such a Thing as Good Death?" presented by John Abraham, Certified Fellow in Thanatology, the science of the experience of dying and bereavement. It will take place 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, July 27, in Congregation Beth Sholom’s building, 340 N. Queen St., Dover.
Our society, unlike other cultures, has no clear standard, no norm, no widely held concept of what constitutes a noble death, a virtuous death, a dignified death, and therefore a good death. Many cultural factors and medical norms militate against our having a good death. Let’s see if we can secure a good death for ourselves and for those we love. Can we have a good death? John will speak about how we might at least have "the least worst death." Included will be personal experiences and reflections of participants.
Registration is requested for this free program. Contact John at 736-1672 or by e-mail at ja626@earthlink.net.

UUs of Central Del. to hear about tolerance
DOVER — The Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware invite everyone to worship with them on Sunday, June 14, when the Rev. Dr. Joshua Snyder, senior minister of the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington, visits and presents a message on tolerance.

A recent book by Gustav Niebuhr re-examines this key value that Unitarian Universalists have long held so dear. Come to church to see if we can still tolerate tolerance.

What does climate change mean to Delaware?

On Sunday, March 22, Shelley Page, intern minister, will explore their theologies through the lens of music and helps members to discover the theological diversity in their community. Unitarian Universalists embrace a variety of theologies, or ways to think about the great existential questions of where we come from, where we are going and the meaning of our lives in the midst of a world full of beauty and suffering.
On Sunday, March 29, the Rev. Charles J. Stephens, Minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church at Washington Crossing, will deliver his sermon titled “Ecospirituality as a Spiritual Discipline”. The Rev. Mr. Stephens has served his church since 1997, with a particular interest in spiritual guidance and interfaith dialogue, which led him to spend a sabbatical in Oxford, England.
The Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware worship at 11 a.m. every Sunday in Congregation Beth Sholom's building, 340 N. Queen St., Dover. Child care and children’s religious education are provided. For more information, please call 233-7754 or visit uucd.org.
