Christ Episcopal Church, Dover, baptizes and confirms record number of faithful

DOVER – On Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, Christ Church, Dover, baptized and confirmed a record number of the faithful. Two adults, two small children and one infant were baptized by the Right Rev. Wayne P. Wright, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware, who was present for his annual visit to the congregation. Three adults and one young adult were confirmed by the bishop. Three others were received into the church, and three reaffirmed their baptismal vows. All candidates were mentored and prepared to receive the sacraments by the Rev. Celeste O. Cox, rector of Christ Church for the past 10 years. “We are blessed as a congregation to be growing spiritually, and in a rich diversity of God’s people. We are excited about our outreach to people in recovery and the homeless. And our youth group has caught the spirit of serving in the way of Christ; they are now preparing for a mission trip to rural Mexico next summer,” the Rev. Cox said.

Christ Church is one of the oldest churches in the state of Delaware, having been founded in 1703. The congregation worships in a building that was constructed in 1734. Of the many notable people who have attended, one in particular stands out, Caesar Rodney, prominent statesman and signer of the Declaration of Independence. There is a large monument to Rodney in the historic church yard. The church has a very colorful history, some of which is published on the parish Web site http://www.christchurchdover.org. Many passers-by think that the church property is a museum or government building because it blends in with the many other historic structures in downtown Dover. The landmark brick wall, iron gates and large trees of many varieties partially obscure the meeting-house-style church, which, with its lovely 19th-century bell tower, sits back from the streets. The property was actually prepared for and drawn by William Penn when he founded the city in 1683. Penn dubbed the parcel “Church Square,” and it is one of only two parcels that were originally set aside for churches in the city at that time. Often on the First State Heritage Park’s list of tours, the churchyard is an outdoor treasure with many notable people buried there, including past governors and statesmen, military officers and clergy. A self-guided tour of the cemetery is available as well as a labyrinth which people from all faiths use for prayer and meditation throughout the week.

Christ Church Dover to hold special service, Blessing of Animals

DOVER — On Sunday, Christ Church, South State and Water streets in downtown Dover, will hold a special outdoor service and Blessing of Animals. All creatures great and small, two-legged AND four-legged, are welcome to attend! The service will be conducted by the Rev. Celeste O. Cox, rector of Christ Church. Music will be provided by the parish’s adult choir under the direction of Jon Rania. The celebration coincides with the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, who is commemorated on many church calenders on Oct. 4. St. Francis was known to be a lover of God’s small creatures and in many faiths is called the patron saint of animals.

There is no charge to attend; a free-will offering will be taken. Refreshments will follow in the church yard. All are most welcome to attend! For additional information, call the parish offices at 734-5731 or e-mail christchurchdover@verizon.net. There is also information available on the church Web site: http://www.christchurchdover.org.

Christ Church, Dover, launches new Web site

DOVER — In the past few weeks, Christ Church in Dover has launched a completely new web site. The new site was constructed entirely by Lee Ann Walling, a parishioner of the church who will also act as the webmaster of the new site. The new cyber offering replaces one that was constructed and maintained approximately five years ago by Chuck Hughes, also a parishioner, who created and maintained the church’s original web site. Mr. Hughes assisted Ms. Walling with technical advice, etc., as she labored through this project. Also assisting was Dottie Sheehan, a newcomer who recently joined the church and has experience in the field.

"It was a high priority for us to upgrade the Web site," said Jon Rania, lay ministry associate at the church, chief communications officer and music director. "We wanted to do this for local residents and visitors searching for a church on the Internet and also for our parishioners who often look to the Web for the most up-to-date information about our ministries, programs, etc." In addition to all the pertinent information about the church, there are also photos and videos of recent church events and pod casts of recent sermons given by the Rev. Celeste O. Cox, rector of the parish. To view the Web site, go to: http://www.christchurchdover.org.

Christ Church, Dover, to bless backpacks Aug. 23

DOVER — All children should wear their backpacks -- and invite their friends -- to the 10 a.m. service (Holy Eucharist, Rite II, with choir and organ) Sunday, Aug. 23, for Christ Episcopal Church's annual Blessing of the Backpacks.  Children should assemble, wearing backpacks, on the church porch to join the procession in to the church on the opening hymn.  During the service children will be invited forward for a blessing that affirms them as they head back to school.  Note:  Aug. 23 is the final date to bring new school supplies for homeless children at The Shepherd Place.  The need is great -- so bring your items this Sunday.

Christ Church, located at the southeast corner of the intersection of South State and East Water streets  in the historic section of Dover just south of The Green, is fully handicapped-accessible. Off-street parking is available in the church’s parking lot, which can be entered by either Elm Terrace (off South State Street) or Kerbin Street (off East Water Street.) For additional information, contact the church directly at 734-5731, e-mail christchurchdover@verizon.net or visit the parish Web site: http://www.christchurchdover.org.
