Re:             Union 7 Scholarships 2009

On Tuesday June 16, 2009, Union Lodge #7 awarded three college scholarships to local students.  The presentation took place during a meeting of Dover's Masonic Lodge at the Old State House on the Green.  Two of the scholarships were awarded to recent outstanding high school graduates, Eva Marie Gruwell and Andrew Davis.  The third scholarship was awarded to Jessica Collins.  Jessica is entering her second year of college and also received a scholarship from the Lodge last year.

Union Lodge #7 is Dover's only Masonic Lodge and has been in constant operation within the City since 1857.

Background Information

Freemasonry came to Dover on August 25, 1775, with the formation of Old Lodge #18, the predecessor of Union Lodge #7.  This Lodge met for 12 years at the “Sign of General Washington”, an inn that stood at the site of the present Kent County Courthouse.  The first Union Lodge was chartered by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania on June 24, 1809.  This Lodge met in the Dunning Building on State Street until going dormant in 1833.  The Charter was revived by the Grand Lodge of Delaware on June 27, 1857.  Since then, Union Lodge has been in continuous operation.  Besides the Dunning Building on State Street, the Lodge has held its meetings at the Hinkle Building at State and North Streets, and at their first new building at 38 South Street.  After 44 years at the South Street location, the Lodge moved to its second new building at 1478 Wyoming Mill Rd. in February 2005.

Union Lodge #7 currently has approximately 350 members.  The majority of the members reside in the local community, but many live in various States throughout the country.  Several of our members currently serve in the Armed Forces.  The Lodge’s primary charity is Highfield, our Masonic Home located near Wilmington, DE.  The Lodge supports a number of other charities and community groups, and provides scholarships to deserving students in Kent County.
