Patriotic celebration slated for Greenwood VFW

GREENWOOD — The Ladies Auxiliary of Greenwood Memorial VFW Post 7478 at 2 Governors Ave. in Greenwood is sponsoring a patriotic celebration Monday in the Post Home. The guest speaker, Professor Darlene Spitzer-Antezana, a professor of history and women’s studies at Prince Georges Community College in Maryland, will highlight historical information on June’s patriotic observances: Flag Day, and the anniversaries of Congress’ recognition of the Pledge of Allegiance in 1942 and the signing into law of the G.I. Bill in 1944. The District 4 Honor Guard will present the colrs, and light refreshments will be served. The public is invited to attend.

The evening will conclude with the Ladies Auxiliary’s annual Patriotic Auction to benefit Operation Uplink, a program to provide phone cards for active-duty military personnel and hospitalized veterans so they may be in contact with family and loved ones. Handmade knitted items, made by an Auxiliary sister, will be available by silent-auction bids. Each article is suitable for a holiday or special-occasion gift.

Anyone unable to attend, but wishing to support the troops, is invited to contact Auxiliary president Micahele S. Russell at 349-4220.
