Natural Discovery Montessori Charter School (NDMCS), an alternative method to traditional education, is proposing to open a public charter school in Laurel, Delaware. Charter schools are authorized by Del. C., Title 14, Chapter 5 which was enacted in 1995. The creation of the charter school legislation is intended to improve student learning; encourage the use of different and innovative or proven school environments and teaching and learning methods; provide parents and students with improved measures of school performance and greater opportunities in choosing public schools within and outside their school districts; and to provide for a well-educated community.
Montessori education is a philosophy of child development and the method of applying the philosophy in an educational environment to guide a child's growth and the love for learning. Children are respected as unique individuals and as important members of the community. Individualized curriculums are designed to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of the children within the class. Teachers guide and observe the children based on the continuing changes within the child.
