BRYN MAWR, PA (June, 2009) For the fourth year in a row, Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, PA will be supporting alumna and breast cancer survivor, Cynthia Canevari of Milford, DE, in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, to be held June 19-20 in Milford.
Cynthia Canevari graduated from Harcum’s Physical Therapy Assisting program in 1990, and several years ago was diagnosed with breast cancer. After gracefully surviving the pain, fear and emotional trauma caused by radiology and chemotherapy, Cindy emerged both empowered and proactive.
Cindy vigorously participates in the Relay for Life annual event in Milford to support cancer research. “What sets [Milford’s] Relay apart from others is that we don’t stop our fundraising efforts the night of the event,” Canevari explains. “We really create a sense of togetherness, and continue to raise money for a cause we all believe in.”
During the night’s events, Cindy makes it her mission to orchestrate creative fundraising activities in an effort to bring more guests. This year, Cindy will be hosting “Mystery Bingo,” a bingo game in which prizes remain a “mystery” until won.
“This is my fourth year participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life,” Canaveri says, “my participation has allowed me to give back to my community on a much larger scale.”
In addition to her efforts with Relay for Life, Cindy is also the Founder of The Ribbon Cap Club (http://www.ribboncapclub.com), an organization dedicated to helping those with cancer by raising funds for research, education and patient assistance.
In past years, Cindy’s alma mater has offered support for the Ribbon Cap Club as well as for her efforts in the annual Relay for Life. This year, Harcum will continue to support Cindy in the Relay for Life. Amy Shumoski of Harcum’s Alumni Relations Office will be walking as part of the “Ribbons and Rainbows” team to support Cindy’s fundraising efforts.
Harcum will also provide a tent for Cindy’s team to help create a sense of community—a staple in the Milford event’s mission. “I am so grateful that Harcum has continued with unwavering support for my endeavors in the fight against cancer,” Canevari says.
Cindy’s support of and dedication to the American Cancer society is steadfast; she has whole-heartedly dedicated her time and energy to a cause that she believes has done so much for herself and others; “because of the tremendous research done over the past 10 years, I am alive and able to be part of this great celebration of life.”
