Free gardening classes offered
MILLSBORO — East Coast Garden Center at 30366 Cordrey Road in Millsboro is offering a series of free gardening classes to the public this month. Participants are required to register in advance, either in person at the center or by calling 945-3489. A question-and-answer period will follow each class. The classes are:
• Friday, Aug. 7, 5:30 p.m.: Butterfly Gardening, instructed by Mark Bowne. Identifying butterfiles, host plants and nectar designs.
• Thursday, Aug. 13, 10 a.m. The Suucculent Container, instructed by Karen Fox. Karen will be designing a container using several of the Garden Center's variety of succulents.
• Tuesday, Aug. 18, 10 a.m. How to Make a Hypertufa Trough, instructed by Barbara Busch. Participants will make these cement planters using the Garden Center's own pots or planters as a pattern. It is necessary that those signing up for the class bring the strongest pair of rubbers gloves that they can find. There will be a small fee for materials used.
* Sunday, Aug. 23, Container Contest ends. Feel free to bring in pictures. Gift cards will be given as prizes!

Class on Japanese flower arranging set
MILLSBORO — East Coast Garden Center, located at 30366 Cordrey Road in Millsboro, will hold at Ikebana class at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21. Guest instructor Ann Sherwood will give a demonstration on a simple, elegant and graceful Japanese way to display flowers.
Mrs. Sherwood, a graduate of the University of West Florida, lived overseas for 32 years, an experience which has greatly enhanced her appreciation for antiques, artifacts, traditions and cultures. While living in Japan, she obtained her teaching certificate of Ikebana in the Sogetsu School and participated in many Ikebana shows in Okinawa. There is a saying that "Ikebana is an expression of hospitality."
The public is invited to come enjoy a brief presentation on the history of Ikebana, a demonstration of arrangements and material for hands-on participation in the Sogetsu style of Japanese flower arrangements. Please call the Garden Center at 945-3489 to register.

• July 10, 5:30 p.m. The Seaside Garden, instructed by Mark Bowne. The wind, the salt! How can I grow a garden? Mark comes to the rescue.
• July 16, 10 a.m. Refresh Your Summer Container, instructed by Karen Fox. Karen will teach you how to keep your hanging baskets, window boxes and containers looking fresh all season.
• July 13. 5:30 p.m. Container Water Gardening, instructed by Mark Bowne. Water gardening without the labor or expense of a pond.
Also, the center is publicizing a Bus Tour to the National Arboretum in conjunction with Delaware Technical and Community College Owens Campus, Georgetown, on Tuesday, July 14, but registration is required before Tuesday, July 7. The itinerary includes departure from Del Tech Owens Campus at 7:30 a.m., a guided tour of the arboretum in the morning, independent lunch time, and time on one's own at the arboretum between lunch and departure for the return trip. The cost is $55 for members of Adult Plus, and $65 for the general public. For more information, call Del Tech, 856-5618.
