WORLD’S FIRST NUCLEAR-POWERED MERCHANT SHIP TURNS 50 IN JULY!
Baltimore, MD – The World’s first nuclear-powered merchant vessel, N.S. Savannah, turns 50 years old this summer and Baltimore is expected to come alive with a harbor-wide maritime celebration in honor of this National Historic Landmark on July 18th and 19th 2009.
A free-to-the-public open house weekend is scheduled for 10 AM - 4 PM on Saturday, July 18 and from 10 AM until 3 PM on Sunday the19th, 2009, rain or shine.  The Saturday program will include a noon parade of tugs and other vessels (including the 1902 tug Jupiter, which was present for the Savannah’s 1959 launching); dedication of the ship’s main lounge as a memorial to President Eisenhower at 2:00 pm; and a re-creation of the ship’s 1959 launching program beginning at 3:00 pm.  At 3:55 pm a whistle and cannon salute will sound through the harbor to mark the moment of the ship’s launching.  Over the weekend the National Atomic Museum’s “Atoms for Peace” traveling exhibition will be displayed in the Eisenhower Room and the ship will fly the 49-star flag in honor of 1959.
On July 21, 1959, First Lady Mamie Eisenhower ceremonially launched this ship, America, and the world into a new era.  In eight years at sea the Savannah visited over 70 foreign and domestic ports and was visited by more than 1.4 million people while demonstrating the safe and peaceful use of atomic energy.  Non-profit efforts are now underway to restore and preserve this unique vessel.  For more info, please call 410-761-1959 or visit: http://www.nssavannah.net on the web.  Pier 13 Marine Terminal is located at 4601  Newgate Street in the Lower Canton area of Baltimore, Maryland.
