| I never have, and never will, allow my kids to walk to and from school.

According to the National Safety Council, one third of the 90,000 pedestrians killed or injured each year are school-aged children. Just last week, a Phoenix student was hit by a police cruiser while he crossed the street outside his high school.
In supporting community and workplace safety measures, SCF Arizona offers these tips for everyone who enters a school zone.
Drivers
Understand all traffic laws and stay alert at all times. Fifty-eight years ago Phoenix was the first city in the nation to mandate 15 mile per hour school-zone speeds. Since then, the state made it the law and has zero-tolerance for offenders. Driving even one mile above the speed limit can result in a citation for speeding.
The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division has established these school zone guidelines:
· Permanent five-sided school zone signs on the side of roadways warn drivers that children may be crossing at any time.
· Portable signs placed in the center of the roadway must be obeyed.
· The maximum speed from the first sign to the last sing in a school zone is 15 mph.
· Passing another vehicle in a school crossing zone is prohibited.
· There often will be a crossing guard to assist children in getting from one side of the road to the other. You must follow this individual’s instructions and you must come to a complete stop when any person is in the crosswalk.
Students
Beyond the school crosswalk learn other safety precautions. For example, when taking the bus, walking or biking to school, follow the Phoenix Fire Department’s advice:
· Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to pick you up.
· Always stand four giant steps back from the curb, and always line up away from the street.
· Never walk behind the bus.
· If you have to cross the street to get to the bus door, take at least six giant steps forward on the sidewalk before crossing the street. Make sure you and the bus driver can see each other.
· Look around before you get on and off the bus, don’t leave anything behind.
· If you are riding your bike, obey all traffic signals and the crossing guard. Never cross the street against the light, even if you don’t see any traffic.
· Walk your bike through intersections.
· Wear a bike helmet each time you ride your bike, and make sure that it meets one of the recognized safety standards (U.S. CPSC, Snell, ANSI, ASTM, or Canadian).
· Walk with a buddy.
· Wear reflective material. It makes you more visible to drivers.
