1st Annual CDYC/YELL (Dover High Chapter) Youth Summit on Friday, May 22, 2009 at Delaware State University from 8:30AM - 1:35PM. The focus is alcohol and substance abuse prevention, violence prevention, and health & safety. Join us for an experiential day of learning - "Information is Paramount". 9th and 10th grade students of Dover High have been invited to attend this day long youth summit to participate in a variety of workshops, such as, alcohol abuse, youth leadership, violence prevention, and healthy relationships, just to name a few of the topics.

Special Keynote Speaker, Bobby Petrocelli will begin his powerful presentation at 8:30AM in the Delaware State University Theater. Bobby Petrocelli's story is one of personal triumph and hope following a devastating tragedy in his life. One night he went to bed in suburban America, a happy man with a loving wife. But when he woke up dazed in his kitchen, his wife was dead and his life forever changed. The pickup truck that crashed through his bedroom wall was driven by a man who was more than twice legally drunk.

In addition to the youth workshops, there will be two adult workshops for community members beginning at 9:40AM in the Education & Humanities building.

Ms. Natalie Way, Executive Director of Dover's Caring Community Coalition, will conduct a workshop on Social Hosting. Social Host refers to adults who knowingly or unknowingly host underage drinking parties on property that they own, lease or otherwise control. Through social host liability laws, adults can be held responsible for these parties, regardless of who furnishes the alcohol. Reducing youth access to alcohol is the manner in which we can reduce underage drinking among our teens. This presentation will provide information about what is social hosting and how it perpetuates the problem of underage drinking.

Detective Benjamin Feldman of New Castle County Police Department will present on Gang Awareness. Come learn how to identify the signs of potential gang involvement. Learn about the different gangs that are known in or area and how we can make a difference in our communities.
