There is a difficulty with having a posse. I have noted several instances in the "Independent" where instead of dialing 911 and getting connected with actual law enforcement and/or emergency services personnel, people have called the Posse office at night... they got no answer as the member on duty was out patrolling. If there were someone in the office, they would then have to dial the authorities slowing down response time. I would rather pay for have a sworn law enforcement officer patrolling, someone authorized to make an arrest, rather than just call the cavalry.
It was suggested that all Posse members be armed. Then it was stated that they are too old to be trusted with firearms.
Both of these writers need to visit the Posse and learn what it is about. They might even consider joining up.
Before a Posse member may be armed while on duty, he must take the same training that a paid Sheriff's Deputy goes through. This includes use of handcuffs, pepper spray, physical confrontation and qualification on the shooting range. After he has passed this training he must purchase the pistol, handcuffs, pepper spray and belt, holsters, etc. This commonly runs about $1,000 of his own money. Only approved equipment is permitted. The Sheriff does not contribute to the equipment cost at all.
The Posse needs more good people armed or otherwise.
