What conservatives/libertarians refuse to take into account is that if GM were to fail and be sold off piecemeal in a bankruptcy auction is that several hundred thousand people would lose their jobs with little if any chance of finding employment. While I realize that the "compassionate conservative" would say, "Oh, gee, that's too bad. Tough luck", America should be better than that... after all, one of our Constitution's aims is to "Provide for the common good". The free market only works if the greed of the capitalist is tempered by some sense of morality. Lacking that, there has to be some governmental intervention. Just remember that although "good Republicans" curse godless Socialism, it only arose as a response to the abuses of the 19th century industrial barons who treated their employees as chattel, the industrialists co-opting god as being on their side much like the "divine right of princes". Of course, if GM and Chrysler go under, you will always be able to buy a Chinese made car. Even now, they are gearing up for our market.

If GM does file bankruptcy on June 1st it will be a tragedy for our country. The government needs to stay out of running private businesses and let them solve their own problems. The free market works.
