Reader questions award
A recent edition of the Sun City West Independent ("People in the News," May 27, 2009) included an article that stated the Sun City West golf operations was informed that Scott Simpson, manager, was "identified as one of The Most Admired Golf Course Operators in the industry."
He was nominated by the Arizona Golf Association. I have three questions: Who in the AGA nominated him (members of the Sun City West community or other AGA members throughout Arizona)? What were the criteria? Who were the "panel of golf industry professionals" who did the reviews?
To my knowledge, the AGA members in Sun City West, Sun City and Sun City Grand are not represented on the AGA governing board. The ultra-exclusive private country clubs throughout the Valley take these positions.
Living here for more than 20 years with membership in the AGA, I can recall only one golfer from Sun City years ago as a member of the AGA voting board. Certainly the dues collected by the AGA from Sun City West, Sun City, Sun City Grand and Corte Bella far outnumber the monies from the rest of the Valley and maybe the whole state — without voting representation on the AGA board.
I am sending a copy of this document to the AGA asking how this identification was determined. I know for sure I do not feel this admiration and I am confident that many other Sun City West golfers feel as I do.
But, if he is so admired, maybe the AGA could put him in charge of the Papago Golf Course.
