Bylaw change for clubs

Attention all Sun City West chartered club officers, board members and members, the Recreation Centers of Sun City West is attempting to add a provision to its bylaws.

This bylaw change will limit club officers and directors to three consecutive terms in office. After that, one can sit out for one year before one can assume an office or be a director. It makes no difference where the three years are served. It could be served as an officer, being on the board, or both. The rule is, "three years and out."

If one cannot fill the required offices from willing club members, then the club ceases to exist. Let me state here and now, our club officers and board would like nothing more than to be replaced with willing members. Our concern is for the continuance of the club. After 30 years in existence, it would be a disaster for it to fold for the want of willing, eligible, club members. Every election, the club is on the brink of folding without willing replacements,(without the addition of this new bylaw.) Dissolution is almost a sure thing if the change is implemented.

I hear the same from a lot of the other clubs, they too are having difficulty filling the offices. I know of one club that failed this year for lack of officers. I also know that the rec board is aware of the problem.

I have a few questions for the rec board. Are you really trying to fix the problem? Why does each individual club have their own set of bylaws? Is it because each club is very different, and that size does not fit all? Have you thought of how empty the Village Store will become? Have you thought about the two arts and crafts fairs, how many participants will be left to supply the empty tables? Have you thought about how much ill will this will cause among the residents here? Why do you incorporate a major change while a large portion of our population is away?

There are three upcoming meetings regarding this bylaw addition. The first two were June 11 and June 12, and the third is 9 a.m. Thursday, June 25 in the lecture hall. Please plan to be there.
