Cylan Shaffer has been named Rotary October student of the month. He is involved in Schools for Schools, a nonprofit club that raises money to help rebuild war-torn schools and promote the growth of education in Northern Uganda. He holds the office of secretary and is an advocate for this cause. In the National Honor Society, he is the vice president and is also senior class treasurer in the student council


He is currently seeking the most prestigious Arizona scholarship, the Flinn, and hopes to be accepted to Stanford University.


Kayla Hooley won the US Airways High Flyer Award, thanks to her work with the National Student Food Drive to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank. Centennial High placed third in the Valley-wide competition in its inaugural attempt.


Ms. Hooley received a $1,500 gift card from US Airways and was recognized at the Roadrunners’ Hockey Game Oct. 18.


Ms. Hooley, who is the National Honor Society president, helped the student body collect 6,798 meals in cans. Besides bringing actual food, students donated $1 to buy a construction paper can which was displayed in a giant paper semi-truck driven by a paper doll cut-out of principal Jim Davis.


She also wrote announcements for students and included statistics such as, "One out of seven high school students go to bed hungry each night." She shared that each dollar donated would buy seven meals. Students also brought canned items instead of paying late fees on overdue books in the library.

•Child Oriented Occupational Program kids at Sunrise Mountain High School dressed in their costumes and hit the hallways on Halloween to trick-or-treat. The three and four-year-olds decided to collect candy for the troops overseas. The children and their teachers collected over 200 bags of candy from the high school students and staff members. The candy was donated to Packages from Home, a local organization that sends care packages to the troops.

•Mountain Ridge High School continued to support the St. Mary’s Food Bank by participating in the annual high school food drive. This year they collected more than 211,000 cans of food, which will provide 135,000 meals to families in need. With this amount, Mountain Ridge was awarded first place in the state for its participation and was given the John Van Hengel Memorial Cup at the Roadrunners hockey game Oct. 18.


•Mountain Ridge clubs participated in the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Juveniles Diabetes Walk Nov. 1 at Tempe Town Lake. Members of student government, Vocational Industrial Careers of America, National Honor Society, cheer and football teams all walked in support of students on campus that are dealing with the disease. More than 130 members walked and raised money to find a cure. In addition to the walk, paper shoes and raffle tickets for an iPod were also sold. The proceeds were donated to JDRF.


•Mountain Ridge students collected the largest amount of canned foods in the state with the equivalent of 222,273 cans for the eighth year in a row. St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance Executive Director Terry Shannon presented the Student Government with the John Van Hengel Cup trophy for collecting the most food in the six week drive. Students collected enough food for 103,000 meals.


•Students Laura Sterbach and Marqueze Gordon were selected to perform in the All-State Show Choir. About 500 students from Arizona auditioned for the All-State Show Choir. Only 40 students were chosen to participate in the All-State festival which will be held Jan. 8-10, 2009. Participants will have the opportunity to work with Paul Gulsvig, vocal clinician, and Marty DeMott, choreographer, as they prepare for the festival concert.


•Mountain Ridge "Pride of the West" marching band received a Superior with Distinction at the ABODA State Marching Festival. In addition the band was recognized for Outstanding Music Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance, Outstanding General Effect, Outstanding Percussion, and Outstanding Auxiliary.


•Mountain Ridge History Teacher Chris O’Brien received the KNIX/Fulton Homes Teacher of the Week award. He was nominated by Jaclyn Harper, president of Mountain Ridge Community Service Club.
