What impact does your tax credit donation have on the students at PUSD? Ask Zoe Seymour, eighth-grade teacher at Alta Loma Elementary, and she will tell you how her students have flourished, thanks to the tax credit which funded the artist-in-residence program.
Thanks to tax credit donations, Seymour was able to bring in artist-in-residence Sara Yeager to help the after-school Drama Club present Little Red Writing Hood, a spoof of the famous fairy tale where the main character can actually re-write the ending of the story. The Drama Club will perform the play to preschool through third-grade students during the month of December. Yeager, a long-time state-wide artist-in-residence, has worked with Alta Loma students for the past three years.
Offered to seventh- and eighth-grade students, the Drama Club has given several the confidence to pursue drama in high school and community theater. Although students are required to apply and audition for the program, Seymour tries to accommodate all interested students in the club.
“The opportunity to work with Sara and get involved in drama has worked wonders for our kids’ self-esteem and self-confidence,” said Seymour. “It is so neat to see students find success in this art form when other aspects of school aren’t providing them success. I’ve seen students’ absenteeism practically disappear when they know the drama class is depending on them.”
Arizona tax law (ARS 43-1089.01) allows individual taxpayers a tax credit up to $200, or up to $400 as a married couple filing a joint return. In return, the donor is able to get the exact amount back from the state when filing a return. The amount will be deducted from any tax debt or returned as a refund.
One hundred percent of the donated funds goes directly to the school and program selected by the contributor. Contributors can indicate the school they prefer their donation to go to, or designate that their donation be given to the school(s) with the greatest need.
Contributions can be hand-delivered or mailed to the District office or school of your choice anytime throughout the year. Checks or money orders must be received at the District office, 6330 W. Thunderbird Rd. by Wednesday, Dec. 31 or at the school before Thursday, Dec. 18, the last day before winter recess. Online contributions can be made anytime through Wednesday, Dec. 31.
