The Peoria Unified School District Career and Technical Education Department has been awarded the Golden Bell Award from the Arizona School Board Association for the District’s Total Career and Technical Education Program. The award will be presented at the ASBA luncheon 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11 at The Arizona Grand Resort, 7777 South Pointe Parkway in Phoenix.
In the winning nomination, CTE instructional specialist Patti Beltram explained the benefits that students of CTE programs boast, including; lower dropout rates, increased earning potential and increased post-secondary success. The District’s CTE program, established in 2004, includes 27 programs of study and offers 88 percent of the District’s dual-enrollment opportunities where students earn college credit while still in high school. Teachers in the program are among the best in the country and are recognized consistently at the state and national level.
Each year, ASBA selects a number of academic programs throughout the state to honor outstanding examples of excellence in model school programs. All programs selected meet a set of rigorous criteria. They must be student-oriented, have had a significant effect on student achievement, demonstrate evidence of teacher creativity, demonstrate District leadership and have been in operation for at least two academic years.
