Ed McDonnell, left, a resident of Ventana Lakes and a member of the Sun City Elks Lodge, was awarded the President’s Call to Service Award. The award, signed by President George W. Bush, is made to persons who have amassed 4,000 hours or more of volunteerism to public service. His many hours include the Cub Scouts and other youth groups, but his main passion has been as chairman of the Drug Awareness Committee of the Lodge. At times, he devotes as much as 40 hours per week to this endeavor. He is well recognized by the public schools in the Dysart and Peoria Unified School Districts. One Principal remarked, “We are grateful to the Sun City Elks and their Drug Awareness Team, since the Police Departments are no longer doing it.” Mr. McDonnell receives the award from Tom Woods, Youth Activities Coordinator.
