| I think you are right "someone who cares" I bet money they are the same people because there is no way that two people can be that stupid and heartless to teachers . Teachers are crying out for help and i am glad she is getting this attention ! They need it. And thank God you heartless people do not teach because I would rather my kids be with a caring teacher who pours her heart out in aletter than with either one of you anyday of the week!!! Did you forget your meds today?

First of all, GrammarCounts is right on the money. We have too many teachers who can't write who are passing on this inability to write to our students. Second of all, Peoria Daddy, I would never delete something after I wrote it as GrammarCounts did - especially if I were right (WHICH, AS YOU KNOW BETTER THAN ANYONE, IS OFTEN ). Third, someone who cares, grammar is not spelled "grammer". Even if you don't believe grammar is important in today's education of our children, at least learn to spell it correctly if you are going to use it in a sentence. Is that really too much to ask? Fourth, Nada, I believe "snottieness" is actually spelled snottiness. Please tell me you are not a teacher. There's just no way that can be. And, you of all people should know how to spell snottiness. Fifth, Chobee grad, "compasion" is actually spelled compassion. Are you also a teacher? And, finally, D, Frankie, could you find a new saying???? The trite "thank a teacher" saying is starting to make me a bit sick to my stomach.
By the way, I support good teachers wholeheartedly. However, I think there has to be a better method to weed out the bad ones (and there are bad ones)......It shouldn't be a case of because a teacher has been in PUSD for twenty years, her or his job is safe.....Even if Sandie Hammon can't write very well, her passion for teaching truly shows through. Why is she automatically thrown out on the street while we are stuck with some lifers that could really give a d**n if the students learn or they don't?
An "educated" student who can't spell or write a coherent sentence because their teacher was grammatically inept is as bad as an uneducated student.
I didn't write it, but I wish I would have. And GrammarCounts, by the way, you used improper agreement of an educated student and their teacher. Student is singular so you should have actually stated it was his or her teacher......
Remember the good old days when all we had to worry about was lunch?? This economic crisis with teachers about to be fired, etc., puts this silly little issue in perspective a bit, doesn't it? Aren't you all a bit ashamed of yourselves?
You should be.....

| Wow you are something else!!! Wow!!! I am amazed of how someone who has to try to show how great she is because she can write "proper Grammer" How do you look in the mirror???? You are a piece of well we will leave that alone . Here is a teacher who wrote down her feelings and put herself out there and you think she is thinking of GRAMMER??? You are a very uncompassionate toward others and what is taken place with our schools. WE DO NOT CARE ABOUT HER GRAMMER RIGHT NOW WE JUST WANT HER TO BE HEARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SEE THE DIFFERENCE? I bet you have no friends HUH?

I truly appreciate your obvious love for teaching and for the children in your classroom; your passion sets a wonderful example and I heartily applaud it. I in no way, shape or form want to upset you further because you sound like a teacher who sincerely loves her profession and her students.
With that said, I must point out that as a teacher, your writing and grammar leave something to be desired. This is a sticking point I have had for years with teachers; don't they teach grammar and sentence structure (your letter overflows with incomplete sentences) in college any more?
Here are just a few examples:
"formally" should be "formerly"
"to turn too" should be "to whom to turn" ("too" means "also," plus you can't end a sentence with a preposition)
"many of us teachers" should be "many of us" or "many teachers"
"can not" should be "cannot"
"their" should be "there"
"our" should be "are"
"everyday" should be "every day"
A mistake or typo is something that happens to all of us, but please, consider blending your passion with polished verbal presentation. An "educated" student who can't spell or write a coherent sentence because their teacher was grammatically inept is as bad as an uneducated student.
wow where is the compasion here.

Grammar Counts, you have shown you are a person of compassion for your fellow human. But you had to shove the knife into a person who just found out they lost their job and point out their mistakes. Hell, while you are at, you better blame a teacher for those mistakes too.
By the way, if you can read this, thank a teacher!

I am sorry if my previous post hurt your feelings. Your reaction was passionate and so was mine. I wish you the best.

Editor's note: Copied below is a letter to the editor submitted to the Peoria Independent. You can post your opinions by clicking on "Reply."
My name is Sandie Hammon and I am a teacher in the Peoria Unified School District. This is my second year in the district. I formally was in the Washington Elementary School District where I started my career as a teacher assistant and then went on to be an Elementary teacher.
I am writing you because I do not know who else to turn too. As you know many of us teachers are losing our positions because of education budget cuts. This scares me for many reasons. One being that our students, our kids will not get the education they need and deserve. Right now students are coming in at such a low level, that teachers need to meet with them in small groups daily to give them the extra help they need to get close to grade level. How are we going to reach these kids if we get rid of teachers and place more students in the classroom? They will fail! Some may not but some WILL!
There is no getting around that. How can we do that to them? They could have a chance if we provide education for them. We need to stand up for these kids and promise them an education in their future that they need and deserve. Many of the students I work with come with little if any exposure to school. We are now going to put them in a class size where they will not get the attention they need? Come on, we can not let this happen.
Would you put your own child in a class where their are 40 to 50 students? We need to CHANGE the way we do things in education here in Arizona because it is not working. Our kids are falling behind as it is and now it will be worse if you fire teachers because of budget cuts. Also, it is sad that ARIZONA pays more a day to house inmates than we do to educate our students in public schools. How is this even happening? If we do not educate now we will be incarcerating later. This is a FACT! These kids again do not even have a chance. It is scary because we need to build a future for them so they can be leaders. They may even run for office one day but will they be educated? Does this scare you as much as it does me? If so VOTE YES for education.
Do not turn your backs and think this will go away. It will not! It will get worse from year to year. We need to change now. We are already behind education compared to other states. Finally, I understand we are in a budget crunch but we can not take it out on our kids. We have to do other cuts or raise taxes somewhere for our kids. I am a teacher who was told she will not be given a contract next year NOT because of lack of experience or bad performance because I have only been with Peoria District 2 years. I have been teaching for almost 9 years from preschool to first grade. I love working with the kids. I love working with kids that many teachers do not want in their class. I love coming to school and working with those hard to reach kids and show them I truly care and really want them to succeed.
I give them hope other teachers our just like me. Other teachers have the same story as mine. They also see students who are high risk kids. But love working with them in their district giving them hope and an education filled with dreams. This is real and we see it on a regular basis. And, when these students come to our classroom, our little community they open up like you won't believe. I can not even put into words how it feels or looks like but I can tell you it is happening everyday, every week and every year in our classroom.
The students love coming and some even hate when the weekend comes because there is no school. Imagine that! Please do not take that away from them. I love my job! I love making these kids see that they are someone special and they can do whatever they want to succeed and I will do whatever it takes for them to succeed because God blessed me with this gift “teaching”. Please do the same. Do whatever it takes for them. We are a team and we can do what we put our minds to do! Please help us save education in Arizona. Our kids need to be in a class size that meets their needs not ours, we need to provide more money to educate not to incarcerate and we need to keep teacher like myself who honestly want only the best for our students.
The kids count on us to be there. I want to be there for them. Please do not turn your backs on them. They are the future. Give them a chance to succeed in life. We need to vote YES on their education. They are little people with dreams and we educators want to give them tools to be all they can be. We want them to be educated? Can you lay your head down at night and say “I gave "Arizona Kids" my all? It is disappointing t o know that some vote NO on educational needs please do not be that someone. Lay your head at night knowing you are making a difference in our kids in Arizona. The difference could be between education and incarceration. Please be there for all the kids in Arizona.
