Asked which he would choose, hiring 100,000 new teachers or firing 100,000 bad teachers, there is a long pause—another good sign—before he says he would take the new teachers because most of the worst teachers are older and are retiring.

Sissy, for further reference know that Godfly, cheerleaderforclosers and areyounotkiddingme are all the same person whose singular intent is to call attention to themselves.
Nada - I hate to do this, but I must. If Godfly, cheerleaderforclosers, and areyounotkiddimg me are indeed the same person, you actually used improper agreement.
Godfly, cheerleaderforclosers and areyounotkiddingme are all the same person whose singular intent is to call attention to himself (oh wait, I'm the wife of a rich dentist, so it should actually be herself).

| I agree with you! And you are right! I just hope teachers like Sandi Hammon make a difference for kids. I am lucky to be a stay at home mom but wish that teachers had more respect than they get! I am sorry for any insults, sincerly!

Alright people. Could we give the petty, trolling posts a rest already? Sheesh. It is one thing to debate a topic, it is quite another to simply throw rants, insults and petty corrections around.
I'm assuming you're all adults. Act like it.
This is an internet discussion forum, not college english. Sure, we expect correct spelling and decent grammar. But everybody "fat fingers" posts and doesn't necessarily proof-read that much.

| First off I never ever said I used proper grammar! secondly, I am done with all this ,I am going to back up teachers and hope they get the money they need to have for our kids schools. I am NOT going to continue with all the drama with you two anymore. I bet you are Godfly or a friend and you two really need to help kids and hope they get what they need for their education and stop with the grammar issues on here. I am writing down thoughts NOT writing to impress you or anybody else. So the drama ends here! Write all you want I am NOT going to write back to you or Godfly...Your just not worth it!

You are cruel and I had trouble sleeping last night. You are a meanie, meanie, meanie!!!!
By the way, Sissy, as you may know, I have this hangup about adult people who miss elementary grammar rules and you have violated number uno on my hitlist. Let's analyze, shall we?

Do you see a problem with this at all? Now, I must say, this upsets me about as much as your biting sarcasm.

The ideas are below. Lets discuss these instead of personalities:
Idea 1: Suspend all education tax credits. Why? Because it will add more than $100 million to the state’s general fund. Besides, most of the money goes to private schools, and what does go to public schools is for extracurricular activities. Our legislators are constitutionally bound to provide and fund a public education for this state’s children. During a time of financial crisis when they have made it clear that they cannot fund what the law obligates them to, legislators have no business financing private schools or extras in public schools. Besides, the state isn't asking either private schools or charter schools, which they fund, to share in the budget cuts. It is only fair that they do.
Of course, if our legislators were really serious about cleaning up the budget mess they would suspend all tax credits. Doing so would add a total of $340 million to the state’s general fund.
Idea 2: Re-implement the Qualifying Tax Rate (QTR). If they legislature were to do this another $588 million would be restored to the general fund.
At one time all of us paid into the QTR through our property taxes, and every single penny went to education. Three years ago the state legislature decided that they would pay for this out of their general fund instead. Several legislators, including Senate President Bob Burns, want to repeal the QTR permanently.
The question is why? Why would legislative leaders faced with a monumental deficit want to do away with a source of revenue they should have never been paying in the first place? One word: politics.
Re-instituting the QTR would cost the average Arizona homeowner less than $60 per year. Burns and others in the legislature say re-instituting the QTR would be tax increase. That’s a lie. What it would be is the end of a tax holiday they should never have created in the first place.
Idea 3: Do not permanently eliminate the county equalization tax. Opening this revenue stream and you can add another $250 million to the state’s general fund.
Idea 4: Freeze or reduce the state’s homeowner rebate. This idea adds another $250 million to the general fund.
Most of you don’t know this, but the state pays for the first 38 percent of every homeowner’s property tax bill. That’s right, for every $100 you owe, the first $38 are paid by the state. That figure is scheduled to go up to 39 percent next year. By freezing, or rolling the homeowner's rebate back to 2004 levels, it’s possible to add $250 million to the state's general fund and, because property rates have gone down, do it without a tax increase.
Taken together, these steps will add another $1.48 billion to the state’s general fund, and the 20 percent the legislature wants to take from every school district’s budget would drop precipitously. Add in dollars targeted to education in President Barack Obama’s stimulus package, and the needs for any cuts to education would likely go away.

Nice try, but it doesn't cut it.
Like I said, you'd rather pour an ungodly amount of energy and passion into demeaning and critisizing people you don't know on a newspaper forum instead of doing something worthwhile for your own children. Doing nothing is your bottom line.

That's where you're mistaken, Jim. I'm not rolling over. I'll be in the voting booth again as I always am trying to vote some people in that agree with my views. That is where we are going to change things.
I often use the example of the closed campus fiasco. It is exactly the same situation. They knew these people were going to close the campuses. If it was that important to people they should have voted people in to open the campuses. They didn't and no matter how many speeches they gave afterward at the board meetings, no matter how many nasty blogs Ercickson and Frankie wrote about it, no matter how many sitins they had, the campuses remained closed. And the same people were voted in again....
It is exactly the same situation here. We knew what these people were about when we elected them. Read my lips, no new taxes. For things to change and for us to change the makeup of the legislature, people are going to have to feel some personal pain. That is about to happen.

The reason we've been in this position is because people like you chose to sit on your hands instead of taking action.
And this isn't about you or whether you're right or wrong. This is about being able to look your kid in the eye and tell him or her that you did everything you possibly could to help improve their life.
If you're willing simply to give up, fine. You have every right in the world to raise the white flag and let them roll over you. The real shame of it is that you seem to be a intelligent person. I simply don't get folks like you. You'll pour an ungodly amount of energy and passion into demeaning and critisizing people you don't know on a newspaper forum, yet you won't even consider applying that same energy and passion into doing something worthwhile for your own children.
My choice is to keep fighting. If I lose, fine, but at least I'll be able to look at my kids and know I did my level best for them.

This state has been 49th or 50th in education funding for years on end. The legislators we've had have been voting the same way for years. All incumbents were reelected. What makes you think they are going to suddenly see the light? Any aroma of a tax increase is just not going to happen. I hope I'm wrong, but I won't be. Mark it down, will you?
And Nada - That was an extremely snotty remark. I stand up for my kids every two years in the voting booth where it counts. Unfortunately, not enough people agree with me, so I am forced to live with it. Sometimes we all have to endure a little pain before we get the idea that maybe we need to shake things up. We are about to endure a little pain.....we'll all survive and so will our kids. We've taught our kids that in life you don't always get everything you want (for instance maybe you'll have to eat in that school cafeteria, get over it) and sometimes life is all about getting through the hardships that come your way.

Like you, I volunteer in my kids' schools, donate supplies, spend plenty of time of PTSO activities and am fortunate to only be a phone call away should either of the schools my children attend need help. And I also appreciate that you do all that while holding down a job.
But to answer your question, yes, I believe our legislators want to cut money from education because their actions say they do.
I do believe our legislators want to take money away from education, and they have wanted to for a long time. Up until recently they were prevented from doing so because Arizona had a strong governor who listened to, and balanced, the wishes of her constituents.
When our legislators refuse to even consider opening the opportunities to increase revenue readily available to them, then, yes, I believe that want to take money away from education.
If our legislators had the best interests of this state at heart, they would close all the loopholes and freeze all of the tax credits. This would give them more than enough money with which to work without taking it out on the backs of our children and the most needy among us.

DanaM: Do you honestly believe that our legislators WANT to take money AWAY from education? Everyone needs to cut back during these tough ecomonic times. Do I like it? Hell no. I hate it. I want to go back to the good ol' days when we were spending money like drunken soldiers. Life was good, then. Times are bad, now. I hate to tell you this, Dana, but it's not just the teachers who are affected by this economic downturn.
I, for one, am willing to do my small part by volunteering in the classroom to help my kids' teachers. I hope this is helpful to the teachers because it takes time away from my "real" job [i.e., the job where I actually get paid], but if I can do this one-day a week, maybe there are others out there who could also give up a little time to help. I also donate supplies to the school (and - no - I don't use "tax credit" for these donations). I think everyone out there could donate a box of kleenex, or a ream of paper, or a box of crayons.

You are forced to live with those who were elected, you are not forced to accept their personal or political agends. Being a good citizen does not mean rolling over when you think something is wrong. It means being active and making sure that the decisions of elected officials are in the best interest of all of us. It means confronting them when they are wrong.
When a substandard education is forced upon your children, exactly what will you tell them when they ask you what you did to prevent it? The reason this country is in the shape its in is because of people like you. All mouth and not action.
If someone bigger and stronger than you starts beating you about the head, will just stand there and take that too?

We're not stuck with anything.
It seems to me that your solution is to complain instead of trying to use the power of public pressure to get the legislature to do the right thing. I am sorry, especially for your kids, that your solution is to simply raise the white flag of surrender.
As for me, I might lose, but I'm not going down without a fight.

As stated earlier, the better idea is to vote these individuals out of office. We didn't do that. We now are stuck with our decision. Obviously, the people have spoken. Messing with the private school tax credits is truly a laughable proposition. It ain't going to happen.......

I have to admit, you are excellent in calling attention to yourself.
Now, let us call attention to some ideas that will bring money into the schools. The latest post on this blog is not a bad starting point:

We do indeed have other issues, but isn't the fact that we are graduating kids WHO can't read a book cover to cover or write a simple paragraph a big deal? Your statement about who really cares is unfortunately true. The problem is becoming kids from other nations are better educated and better equipped to compete in this global world than our kids are. We all lose in this scenario.
By the way, Jake, I started to comment on your little paragraph here, but I will refrain. I'm trying to be kinder and gentler......

My original comments were not related to a "slight typo," they were related to a multitude of grammatical errors, misused words, incorrect spellings and incomplete sentences. I also stated that I thought the poster's passion was wonderful, and I agree with other posts that it does not seem fair that the potential layoffs are simply "last in, first out" rather than based on merit and evaluations. Is that a union issue?

I see you are now correcting yourself. How lovely. How insignificant.
As I noted earlier, this person is to be ignored. Why? Because as you have already seen, this person only wants to speak about him or herself, and will use any slight typo or typographical error as a launching point to change the subject/
If you want to have an intelligent conversation, lets talk about what can actually be done for teachers and education. The link below is at least a starting point.

Godfly - you said:
I didn't write it, but I wish I would have. And GrammarCounts, by the way, you used improper agreement of an educated student and their teacher. Student is singular so you should have actually stated it was his or her teacher......
You are correct, it should be "his/her" teacher; "their" is plural - thanks!
