Apache Junction City Council discussed the potential designation of the "National Day of the Cowboy" as a city-sponsored event at its April 14 work session.
According to city officials, the event is set to occur July 26 at Goldfield Ghost Town near Apache Junction.
Several councilmembers believe the event would be a great way to draw attention to the area.
"This is an ideal time to showcase the city," Councilman Jeff Serdy said. "This is a way we can highlight our assets."
Last year’s event attracted over 3,000 people. By lending support to the festival, this year expanded to three days, the city council hopes it can help attract even more visitors to the area, which would ultimately benefit Apache Junction.
Apache Junction Vice Mayor R.E. Eck says the opportunity presented could be worthwhile. He pointed out that "3,500 people spending three to four dollars in our community could generate revenues."
To keep within the operating budget, event coordinators need help with the delivery, setup and take down for the chairs, tables, and tents.
Apache Junction Councilman Joseph Severs gave his support during the work session.
"Personally, I’d like to help out with (setting up) tables, banners, and chairs," he said.
According to City Manager George Hoffman, the city already sponsors eight community events during the year, and "National Day of the Cowboy" would be outside the city’s limits.
But new events are considered within the budgetary process.
"This request was filed after the deadline, but I am seeking to provide an answer to the chamber, one way or the other, so they can proceed with event planning," Mr. Hoffman said in a written statement.
If the council declares National Day of the Cowboy as a Community Event, staff can waive the normal equipment rental fees, valued at $750.
"While we could put up and take down the display banners, given our budget context, I’d encourage that if you agree to help, the city will not write a check for the cost of making the banners," Mr. Hoffman said.
Councilmember Chip Wilson says the idea of a city-sponsored "National Day of the Cowboy" is a great idea.
"This event recognizes our heritage not only locally but nationally," he said. "More importantly, it represents the history of the cowboy."
The Apache Junction City Council is set to vote on the issue at its May 6 meeting.
