Obama will handle it. You don't have to even be poor to get free lunches-heck maybe everyone will get a free lunch in our new socialist nation cuz everyone needs to eat right? Maybe he will put it in the Constitution.
Sounds like you need a new puppy, azsunshine.
landrover: So glad this non-partisan local issue (that has nothing to do with Obama) was resolved. Being a teacher, I know how easy it can be to get wrapped up in frustration and forget about respect - especially with the middle school age group! lol. Hopefully this situation was a good wake-up call and reminder for that staff member.

| I am VERY pleased on how the school handled this situation!!! I am happy to say with the help of Carol Weekly this situation has been rectified. I think she handled it well and insured me that this should never happen again to ANY student. We have received apologies and I am happy with the outcome. The lunch program has changed quite a bit from when we were children and I am glad to know that the level of professionalism has been raised! It is nice to know that customer service has even found its way in our schools.. Thank you!!

| Yes her account had money in it and a mistake was made. Mistakes do happen but e they should have checked it a second time. Or maybe a second person could have looked at it. I am sure all your daughter wanted to do was slink away out of embarrassment. And if they had a replacement meal plan in place she could of at least had a sandwich and milk. Although I don't think that is a good policy either. I don't like to ever point out differences in the kids. She should have been given her regular lunch and this should have been brought to your attention not her and her classmates! If they allow a student to "charge" a meal and the money is not paid back or if this happens all the time then that is a different problem. But everyone, no matter how organized they are forget Monday morning lunch money. Such a big problem and so much time is going to be spent on this at your home and at the school and what for? I don't know what a middle school lunch costs now but was $2 going to break the bank that they couldn't allow her to have her lunch and you pay them back? (of course she had money in her acct but they thought she didn't).

That is what is sooo crazy about this story. THERE WAS MONEY IN HER ACCOUNT!! THE ACCOUNT WAS MARKED CLOSED. I was told that an account is marked closed only after a child has left the school. It was a mistake on the schools part. She was not offered anything. Just told sorry your account is closed and the tray was confiscated.
I do applaude your giving spirit. What a wonderful person you are for doing that for others. I wished more where like you.

When my daughter was in grade school in Tempe and I was the PTA president at her school and of course at the school every day, I saw kids being treated bad because their parents had forgotten to give them lunch money. Secretaries and lunch ladies told them it was the kids responsibility to make sure they had lunch money and no, they couldn't "charge" the meal and they couldn't call Mom at home or work. Sometimes kids would be given a peanut butter sandwich and a carton of milk but according to my daughter (who is now a teacher) because of peanut allergies kids are SOMETIMES given a cheese sandwich.
It's NOT the kids responsibility to make sure they have lunch or lunch money. It is their parents or guardian's responsibility and YES they can forget. It is cruel to make children go thru the humiliation and to make a child go without a meal. How do they expect that kid to learn anything that afternoon with no food in their stomachs???? You know that is all they are thinking about.
I gave the school office an envelope with money in it and had some fighting words with them about this. But I threatened and insisted that any kid who was going to go lunch-less be given lunch money from my little fund. No hassle to the student and no need for payback. When this money was about gone, they were to let me know and I would replenish it. But I guess they got the message because they made sure that kids were given a sandwich, piece of fruit and milk if they had no lunch money. Rarely was my money used. They actually were angry at me for "not teaching the kids responsibility!!".
I remember as a child sitting in a classroom not paying attention to the teacher because all I could think of was hoping my empty stomach would not growl out loud and embarrass me. This was before breakfasts were served at schools, free or discount lunches etc. We were very poor and there was never quite enough to fill the stomachs of rapidly growing kids. It just breaks my heart to think of kids having to go thru this. And yes, missing one lunch is not going to really harm your daughter, Landrover, but why should she have to go thru it all??? Complain to the school and make sure they have a plan for kids to be given some kind of meal when this happens. I would also try to put a months worth of money in their lunch acct at the beginning of each month. Maybe that would help too.

| Well that is why the lady is going to get talked too. The lunch lady DID take her tray after she got her lunch because her account had said, it was closed. I was told by the head of the lunch program that her account had money and that all of this would have been avoided if the lunch clerk would have looked INTO her account, that she would have seen this, this is all according to the lunch program director. I find it appalling that she be denied lunch from an error made on the part of a school.

Just kidding....I know your mad and rightly so. Make sure that the office reprimands the lunch lady and tells her what the proper thing to do is.

I was just in the office last week and while I was waiting a boy came to the front office and said his mom forgot to give him money and asked to call his mom. The office lady said he could call but if is mom couldn't make it down to the office in time to see someone else (forgot the name) and that person would take care of lunch that day. So no-they don't let kids go without lunches....at least the front office doesn't
And if you were poor there is a form to fill out to get free lunches. ....

So yesterday my daughter comes home from the QC Middle school and tells me the lunch lady took her food tray away from her and told her, her account was closed. What????? Apparently there was a mix up with her lunch account and her account when first looking at it came up closed. We have been attending this district for 3 years now. Never had an issue like this and find it rather appalling. My daughter tells me "thats ok mom, my friends let me eat off their lunches." I was disgusted!!! Her account had money in it.. I called and checked. The higher ups are going to check into it. I was told that if the lady had looked further into my daughter's account she would have seen that yes, there was money in the account and yes, she was eligible to eat lunch. I am demanding the lady get reprimanded and I want an apology and I want my daughter to have an apology.
I can't not imagine the humiliation that my daughter felt. What if we were sooo poor and couldn't afford the school lunch would they then have denied a child? I thought that no child in this country should go without a breakfast and lunch.
I am still in shock that her lunch tray was confiscated and left to what??? Be thrown in the trash?? While she had to watch and pick off of others lunches. That just makes me sick! If it happened to mine daughter, I wonder how many others this has happened to. I am still waiting for the principal to call me. I guess I will just wait and see what happens. Thanks for listening to me vent.
