Double-Digit Tuition Increases     by Anne Ryman - Nov. 6, 2008 01:48 PMThe Arizona Republic

Double-digit tuition increases could be in store for all undergraduate students at the University of Arizona and for new students starting in fall 2009 at Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University.

But students at two of the three state universities, ASU and NAU, would get a bit of a break in future years as they would be part of a guaranteed-tuition program designed to give them more predictability over future costs.

Presidents of the three state universities announced their tuition recommendations this afternoon, which range from increases of 10 to 14 percent depending on the university. If approved by the Arizona Board of Regents in December, it would mark the first time that base undergraduate tuition and fees cross the $6,000 mark at ASU and the UA.

Current students at ASU and NAU won't be subject to the same hikes, though, as both schools began offering guaranteed-tuition plans this year. For those students, ASU's rates are projected to go up 5 percent next fall to $5,576 while NAU's are expected to increase by 3 percent to $5,557
UA doesn't have guaranteed tuition so current students are facing a proposed nearly 13 percent increase.

Tuition rates vary depending on the school. ASU has the most expensive tuition and fees for undergraduates this year, at nearly $5,700 a year. Graduate and out-of-state students pay higher rates, and some individual colleges and satellite campuses charge different rates.

Even so, that rate is less than the $6,585 national average for public, four-year universities, according to the College Board.

It is becoming more and more expensive for kids to go to college.  When I entered ASU in 1962, the tuition was $150.  I still had to work to go to school for $1.25 an hour at Goldwaters. My first teaching job was in Tempe in 1966 and paid $4500. a yr.  My boyfriend  bought a brand new1966 Mustang convertible for $4800 at Paradise Ford in Scottsdale.  I bought a nice home for $13,000.  My payments were $80. a month @ 3.5% interest rate....I assumed the VA loan.

At least my long term memory still works.  Whew.  That was quick.
