Fire risk poses need for caution
Officials request resident cooperation to prevent disaster

A wet winter has led to a green spring and a brown summer, encouraging city and county officials to ask North Scottsdale residents to take steps to reduce the higher than usual potential for brush fires.
“This winter, the county received an abundance of rainfall which produced beautiful wildflowers and lush vegetation in the parks,” Maricopa County District 3 Supervisor Andy Kunasek stated in a news release. “However, this vegetation has since dried out and left the parks with a large quantity of ground coverage that could easily catch fire.”
Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department will initiate a fire ban beginning Monday, May 12. Mr. Kunasek noted the annual fire ban’s start date comes a little earlier than usual due to rainfall in the early months of 2008.
The ban, which affects 10 Maricopa County Parks, including McDowell Mountain Regional Park, 16300 McDowell Mountain Park Drive, and Cave Creek Regional Park, 37019 N. Lava Lane, prohibits the use of campfires, fire pits and charcoal grills. However, visitors can still use propane grills in designated areas.
According to Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department spokeswoman Dawna Taylor, the fire ban aims to limit the possibility of brush fires. She added officials have yet to designate a date to lift the ban, which will eventually be determined by the amount of rain the county receives during this summer’s monsoons.
