Crime declines in North Scottsdale
Burglaries from vehicles persist despite reduction

Less North Scottsdale residents are becoming victims of crimes in recent months but safety officials are encouraging them to take precautions in order to continue the positive trend.

“My number one goal is to keep this city safe so you and I feel comfortable traveling anywhere in Scottsdale,” Mayor Mary Manross said during an April 24 breakfast event. “I don’t want to live anywhere I don’t feel safe.”

The city saw a dip in crime last year, according to Scottsdale Police Chief Alan Rodbell. He noted incidents classified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as “part one” crimes — including homicide, burglary, robbery, rape, vehicle theft, aggravated assault and larceny — dropped 3 percent in 2007.

The news was even more positive for North Scottsdale residents. According to Cmdr. Bill Wilton, police reported a 10 percent decrease in major crimes last year in District 3, which encompasses the area between Cactus and Stagecoach Pass roads.

“Burglaries from vehicles were down 5.4 percent from 519 in 2006 to 491 in 2007,” he stated in a community newsletter. “Auto thefts were down 18.6 percent from 204 in 2006 to 166 in 2007.”
