2 restaurants step up to host Fourth of July celebrations
Many Valley festivities are available to the public

In the face of one of the nation’s worst recessions, two Cave Creek restaurants are stepping up to the plate to pay for and host the town’s annual “3rd and 4th of July Fireworks.”

Harold’s Cave Creek Corral and The Silver Spur Saloon at Frontier Town are reaching deep into their pockets to fund the annual fireworks events.

Both events are traditionally funded in part by the Town of Cave Creek and hosted by the nonprofit Cave Creek Merchants Chamber of Commerce. Several other local businesses over the years have also made contributions to cover event costs.

• Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, 6895 E. Cave Creek Road, celebrates Independence Day early July 3 by hosting a “3rd of July” Fireworks Display at sunset.

Keeping with tradition, Harold’s plans a large party with live entertainment, starting at 6 p.m. EastonAshe will energize the crowd outside from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Country western band Young Country performs inside from 8:30 p.m. to close.

The festive, free event also features an outside barbecue, drink specials, prizes, face painting and the Games2U Mobile Video Theater, a self-powered truck featuring all the top XBox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii games.

Reservations are required. Call 480-488-1906 or visit http://www.haroldscorral.com.

Danny Piacquadio, managing partner of Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, said he believes the expense to produce the annual Americana event is “a worthwhile investment to band our community together, honor the foresight and courage of our forefathers and show respect to all the brave service men and women who work so hard to protect our freedom.”

“This has been a very challenging year for the Town of Cave Creek, its businesses, nonprofits and residents,” Mr. Piacquadio said. “Now, more than ever, we need to unite as a community to help each other through these rough waters.”

• The Silver Spur Saloon at Frontier Town, 6245 E. Cave Creek Road, hosts July 4 the town’s “Fourth of July Fireworks Display” at sunset. Fireworks will be shot off behind the post office, with open seating in Frontier Town and its east parking lot.

Festivities include an outdoor barbecue (hamburgers and hot dogs), live music, a dunk tank and more. Admission and parking is free. Dinner reservations are highly recommended. For information, call 480-488-3317 or visit http://www.silverspursaloon.com.

Marc Peagler, proprietor of the Silver Spur Saloon and Cave Creek Merchants Chamber of Commerce’s president, said the event is meant to cater to all Valley residents, not just those living in Cave Creek.

He encouraged the public to spend their entire weekend in Cave Creek — shopping or hiking — and then take in both fireworks displays.

“We’re a town full of character, and we won’t let a recession get in the way of expressing our patriotism,” Mr. Peagler said.

In Scottsdale, the city does not plan on any fireworks displays this year, according to Mike Phillips, city spokesman. Instead, city officials have devised a picnic that they believe is chalk-full of patriotism.

Mr. Phillips said the public is invited 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 4 at Scottsdale Stadium, 7408 E. Osborn Road, Scottsdale, to attend a “Grande Olde Fashioned Picnic.”

Activities include games and crafts for the entire family, as well as an opportunity to write to servicemen and provide them with care packages.

Attendees must bring their own picnic dinner — grills will be available. Call 480-312-2771 for more information.
