This is a emotional appeal for a problem that does not exist in the Sun Cities. If you had been attending any of the HOA meetings, you would have heard the common sense questions and answers why curbside is not needed and will cost more to a fixed income community then it is worth.
First, curbside will require more huge trucks running through the communities polluting the air every week.
Two, we will all be forced to purchase the needed recycling bins on wheels for the various recyclables to put curbside. More cost and an eyesore.
Three, we already have recycling in the Sun Cities at easy to find, drive to, and use facilities that are clean and centrally located, which are run by the Lions and benefit the needy. What could be better.
Finally, curbside is for the lazy. True recycling as it is now in Sun City, is an individually motivated, low cost, and no polluting common sense approach to a helping the environment. And the funds raised by the Lions go directly to charities to assist the needy, not some government bureaucrats pocket or pay check.
Problem already solved. Next!

The Lions Club tried plastic and stopped because it was costing them money. Right now there is an overage of it so you have to pay to get rid of it if you can find someone that even wants it.

We do have curbside paper pick up for recycling; but even that is shrinking with the size of the papers. Although the mail ads and offers help to bulk it up again.
Otherwise I think the reason we don't do more curbside collection is the volume isn't there. Half of our residents only live here six months a year. Thus you will get half of the recycled material. Also we average less than two people per household, My guess would be more like 1.3 persons per household which is a lot less than the general population.
To justify curbside pickup we would need to have consistent volume all year long. Until then I think we have pretty good coverage of containers for those of us that do like to recycle. I have not found a bin for plastic; but I also don't have any idea of the economics for that stuff.

WHY DOES SUN CITY, ARIZONA, NOT SUPPORT CURB-SIDE RECYCLE?
WHY DOES MARICOPA COUNTY NOT REQUIRE CURB-SIDE RECYCLE?
Recently when entire groups of people in Mexico were shown wearing masks because of swine flu, were you a bit nervous and threatened? Could this soon be the fate of the population of Arizona because of air quality?
Though the controversy continues over the importance of global warming and rainforest destruction, no one can challenge the fact that recycling is an essential cause. And recycling should not be hidden in a dirty alley. As senior members of society, most of us have struggled to leave a better life for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. However, if we do not take action today to create a sustainable environment, the people who we cherish and want to protect will be forced to wear masks because of daily air quality alerts. Local air quality seriously affects Maricopa County residents already. Every community should be environmentally responsible. Why does Sun City, Arizona, not support curb-side recycling?
