who works in the area of 107th and Olive avenues, said there are always shopping carts at 103rd and Olive avenues.
“They seem to be mostly from Safeway,” Ms. Lynch said.
The nearest Safeway store to that location is at Bell Road and Del Webb Boulevard.

Wrong Mr. Bradshaw.  The nearest Safeway to 103rd Ave & Olive is 107th And Olive.

Someone or a group of someones found a convenient party spot or dumping group for beer cans on 99th Avenue at the intersection with Del Webb Boulevard.
On a continuing basis a large collection of empty beer cans appears in the canal. Maricopa County crews will clean them out, but within a few days a new pile reappears, according to Sun City resident Irma Walters. She coordinates Sun City PRIDES volunteer cleanup routes in the area of 99th Avenue and Del Webb Boulevard.
“This has been an ongoing problem for about two years in that location,” she said.
PRIDES members do not know who is leaving the cans there. However, there is some speculation it might be a resident in the area.
“It might be someone who goes by, even on a golf car, and throws their cans out instead of taking them home,” Ms. Walters said.
The only way to discover the culprit is to sit at he intersection overnight for several days until cans are dumped again. Ms. Walters said she is not willing to do that, nor are any PRIDES volunteers she knows.
“I just wish someone would take more pride in the community,” she said.
This particular situation is not widespread in Sun City, or in the area of 99th Avenue and Del Webb Boulevard.
“It just seems to be that one spot,” Ms. Walters said. “But it is an eyesore for people who drive by, and I go by there several times a day.”
While empty beer cans do not seem to be a widespread problem, abandoned shopping carts are. Sun City resident Rosemary Lynch, a PRIDES volunteer who works in the area of 107th and Olive avenues, said there are always shopping carts at 103rd and Olive avenues.
“They seem to be mostly from Safeway,” Ms. Lynch said.
The nearest Safeway store to that location is at Bell Road and Del Webb Boulevard.
Ms. Walter said shopping carts and other abandoned equipment is beginning to collect again in the canal behind the Safeway store. A PRIDES volunteer was assigned to work that area and had taken it upon himself to clean the canal as far as the Surprise city limits.
“But the county flood control district told us not to clean in the canal because of the liability,” Ms. Walters said.
The beer can dump at 99th Avenue and Del Webb Boulevard is not the only troublesome spot for PRIDES volunteers. Ms. Lynch said the area behind the shops in her area and cleaning under the bridges is a consistent task.
“Behind the shops is always a mess, and cleaning under the bridges is a two-person job,” she said.
PRIDES volunteers have also encountered numerous dead animals on Olive Avenue lately, Ms. Lynch added.
An all-volunteer organization, the PRIDES are in need of new recruits on an ongoing basis, but particularly at this time of year.
“People are heading back to their summer homes, so this time of year is our biggest need,” said Bob Story, PRIDES volunteer and past president.
But the group loses members throughout the year for various reasons, including death, ill health, retirement from the organization and others, he explained. The group does have some difficulty recruiting because people do have misconceptions about what is required, according to Mr. Story.
“Some people think they have to work on a Saturday squad,” he said. “But you only do that if you want to. You can also volunteer to work a specific area and that way you can work when you want to.”
The PRIDES do have the general membership meetings the first Saturday each month, beginning 9:30 a.m. September through April and 8:30 a.m. in May and June, at Bell Recreation Center, 16828 N. 99th Ave. The group does not meet in July and August. There is nor requirement for people to be in Sun City for a particular period of time to be a PRIDES member, Mr. Story explained.
Mr. Story said the PRIDES also have difficulty recruiting because some Sun City residents are still working and because of the different approach to volunteering.
“People will volunteer for a specific cause, but aren’t as quick to volunteer in an ongoing group such as the PRIDES,” Mr. Story said.
Anyone interested in serving in the PRIDES is encouraged to call 623-972-6558, according to Mr. Story.
“Or if you see someone in an orange vest out working, go and talk to them and let them know you are interested,” he said.
