Manhunt in Youngtown for murder suspect
by Jim Cross/KTAR (June 3rd, 2009 @ 12:20pm)
YOUNGTOWN, Ariz. -- A four-hour standoff at a Youngtown home came up empty-handed Wednesday and left authorities searching for a suspected killer.
Sheriff's deputies, joined by officers from the Youngtown Police Department and Arizona Department of Public Safety, surrounded a house, near 113th Avenue and Peoria, after a woman was found murdered about a mile away. Police said the victim and the suspect shared the home.
After about four hours, deputies entered the house and found the suspect gone.
"There was evidence that he had been in that home and has now left the area," said Lindsey Smith of the Sheriff's Office, adding that the man may have gotten out of the house before deputies arrived.
"He may have got out on foot, had a friend or someone he knew pick him up in a vehicle," Smith said.
.She identified the suspect as Manuel Julio Alcantar, 35, and said he was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.
The murder victim, who police said was Alcantar's wife or girlfriend, was not identified. Police also did not say how she was killed.
Steve Bridwell, who lives in the neighborhood where the killing happened, said the once-quiet neighborhood has changed during the recession.
"The last six months, we've had so many abandoned houses and people putting them up for rent," Bridwell said. "People are just moving in and we don't know. They don't check references."

YOUNGTOWN -- Investigators were called to the scene of a deadly shooting in the West Valley city of Youngtown Wednesday morning and later surrounded a nearby home, searching for the suspect.
It happened near 111th and Montana avenues, a few blocks north of Peoria Avenue.
Officers said they discovered a body of an Hispanic woman in the middle of the street shortly after 6:30 a.m. There are reports that the victim had been shot in the neck, but investigators have not confirmed that.
Deputies said it started with a 911 call of a domestic violence situation in progress. The murder happened a short time later.
Family members of the victim rushed to the scene, even breaking through the police line to get to her. The obviously distraught woman was escorted from the scene.
Sheriff's deputies have surrounded a home not far away, believing the suspect is inside.
Investigators said the couple has a history of domestic violence.
