FELTON — Interested Lake Forest School Board candidates have an more time to submit their letters of interest. "We had two letters of interest. The board was disappointed that there was only too, and without making judgment on those two, have decided to advertise for another two weeks. They would just like a greater pool to consider and so they said, ‘we don’t need to be in a hurry, let’s take our time and do this right," Lake Forest Superintendent Dr. Daniel D. Curry said.

The new deadline will be at the end of business June 25.

The original deadline was June 11.

"In the past, the board would review the letters of interest and based upon a review of their letters and resume they’d narrow it just like we would for an administrative position, narrow it down and conduct interviews and elect the person to fill the seat for the rest of the year," Dr. Curry said.

A decision wouldn’t be made until July.

"Most likely the last board meeting in July would be the new person’s first meeting," Dr. Curry said.

The school board seat came open when John F. Moyer III submitted his resignation from the board on May 28 at the board’s regular meeting.

His resignation went into effect the next day. He served three of the five years of his term.

"The board will elect the person that would take John’s place," Dr. Curry said. "That person would be appointed through the next school year. John has two years left on his term. They would have to run the spring, May of 2010, for that additional year."

Interested candidates must submit a letter of interest to the board complete with a resume.

Letters and resumes can be sent to the Lake Forest Central Business Office, 5423 Killens Pond Road, Felton, DE 19943-9801. For more information, call 284-3020 ext. 104.

In other school district news:

•The Lake Forest School District announced last week that Dr. Bridget Amory will take over as principal of Lake Forest South Elementary School. Dr. Amory will fill the top school position left vacant by Dr. Judy Craig following her retirement.

She comes to Lake Forest from the Milford School District where she served as assistant principal of Evelyn I. Morris Early Childhood Center in Lincoln.

•The district is currently going through the process of looking for replacements for its other administration positions it has available including principal positions at W.T. Chipman and Lake Forest Central Elementary School and vice principal at Central along with the district’s special education supervisor position.

"It is a pretty significant change when you have that many people retire," Dr. Curry said. "I have been bragging for the last three years that we haven’t had any turn over in the administration which is also unusual. Usually your odds are you’ll have one every year. I think the state of the economy and the threat at the loss of salary on the state side to cause some folks that were eligible to evaluate if they wanted to keep on working."

•Summer began Wednesday, June 17. Due to construction at the high school, the district’s summer education program will be held in Harrington. The middle and high school classes will be held at the W.T. Chipman and the elementary classes will be held at South Elementary School.

Because of budget cuts, unlike previous years transportation will not be provided.

"We’ve learned over the years and while studying budgets that last year’s (summer school transportation) costs were all out of local dollars. Then we learned that many of our neighboring districts were not doing transportation, we figured we need to reconsider that," Dr. Curry said.
