SUSSEX COUNTY — Two local police officers have been recognized as "top cops."

On Sept. 28, Lt. Brian Calloway of the Millsboro Police Department and Georgetown Police Chief William Topping were recognized by the League of Local Governments. Officer Calloway was named the Municipal Police Officer of the Year while Chief Topping was recognized as Chief of the Year.

Lt. Calloway has been with the Millsboro Police Department for more than 10 years. In addition to his regular duties, he is head of the department’s motor unit. He started the unit two years ago and there are three officers in the unit.

Lt. Calloway also implemented the school resource officer program four years ago and he oversees that program as well.

He was also instrumental in developing the Citizen’s Police Academy and the Business Police Academy. Lt. Calloway has been named Officer of the Year within the department and he has received lifesaving awards on two occasions.

Chief Topping was nominated by members of town council, the Georgetown Police Department, and the town staff.

Suggested criteria for nomination for the Chief of the Year Award include: fostering positive relationships with town council, innovation, leadership, adaptability to changing technology as well as service to the Delaware Police Chiefs’ Council.
