| The problem with your proposals is this: They satisfy the ordinary working taxpayer, but they also go to the core of offending too many large groups of voters -- welfare recipients, state employees, teachers, and those people doing the hiring or being hired as political favors. No democrat in the legislature is going to unwind what they and their friends have constructed over the years in terms of voter loyalty. Until the incumbents are out of office, we are stuck. Those recipients of democrat largesse will continue voting for democrat incumbents.

Folks I just read the article on Delaware State pay cuts and how teachers are working bell to bell on WBOC.com … if you really want to see how stupid people are and how ignorant people are about how much they know then please read this article and the comments section. Here is my two cents… First off why does the state need to make an 8% pay cut on state employees? IF the state can’t live within its means then the state needs to downsize and live within its budget. Thousands of families are being forced to do this right now in Delaware and millions are being forced to do this across the country. The State of California had to learn this painful lesson and so does Delaware! Second off is the fact that unlike highway workers and state secretaries who are able to leave their work at work many teachers do not only take their work home but do it on their own spare time. I work a lot of crazy hours at my job but my job stays at my job as soon as I punch out not so for teachers. Last but not least there are so many ways the State of Delaware could be saving money. Stop hiring state employees on the buddy system every time a state workers family member needs a job. Stop letting laziness to run rampant such as the Highway workers who love sleeping in their trucks… it’s not snowing anytime soon so they don’t have any excesses! If someone is eligible to retire then tell them they have to go… if you’re at the top of the ladder than you probably make more money. Stop repaving Route 1 every two years and let the beach traffic have to ride on the same bad roads the local Delawareans have to ride on and save some money for a change! Get rid of state programs that don’t work but we keep spending thousands on such as segments of welfare… not the people who are facing a bad situation and need the help but the people who stay on it for years and years. Give them a time limit. Single mothers who keep having kids and putting their kids on state programs, if they didn’t learn their lesson the first time don’t make Delaware taxpayers keep paying for their mistakes. I know some of this might be controversial but it is what it is and it needs to be done for the good of everyone!!! And it only took me two minutes to come up with this give me five minutes and I might have just saved Delaware millions more…

| If anyone is interested, the 3rd-party independent audit of the State is online. Huge money for road projects and debt services (payments on bond sales for capital projects including new infrastructure, schools, buildings, etc... that everybody uses.) Everybody wants to pin it on State workers (who will have gone without a raise in 4 years come July 1) to make up for services and infrastructure everybody uses.

| So you are against pay cuts to save money but you are all for continued spending on frivilous things so long as you "regular joe state employee" are the recipient of such things? Last edited on Mon May 11th, 2009 09:05 pm by laughingoutloud

Maybe instead of getting rid of it the great leaders of the state would hand over the tickets they have and give them out to the regular joe state employee as a thank you for your service and sorry for STEALING your money.

| gotta love how the rallies are held on days when school tecahers are not able to attend then the current administration uses the fact that no teachers attended to imply they are OKAY with the current possible cuts.

| Well i have to agree, they the state employees should be thankful, there is so much waste in the state, they could actually cut a 1/3 of those jobs out and the state would still function like it always has. To me education is the only ones I would not cut. We need to educate our children but hold the teachers accountable.

With the events of the nation today and the ecomony the way it is, State employees should be grateful they only had pay cuts and not job cuts!
Quit complaining and focus on the positive; the fact that unlike many Delawarean's they still have jobs!

For a list of all the state employees and how much they make go to http://php.delawareonline.com/state/paycheck/stateSalaries2010.php
There are quite a few of those "made up" positions than I originally thought.

Just when we thought the grass would be greener on the other side the wonderful state of Delaware put Gov. Jack Markell into office. Has this guy lost his sight on reality?
As if we don't ask enough from our state teachers by making them teach our kids that bring guns to school, make threats and have no respect for authority. Now the Governor is proposing an 8% pay cut on top of cuts for benefits the state had funded. Has he not noticed that the prices for everything from paper towels to gas has risen? It cost the average family more money now just to pay for the necessities and now he wants to take money away from them. A pay cut might help the budget but it will hurt the state employees. On top of that it pretty much guarantees he will not be the Governor after the next election.
How many administrative people does the State of Delaware have working for them? How many made up jobs are in the state budget? Maybe lets take a look at them and remove a few of the useless jobs. In 2007 the Gov of Delaware was earning $132.5K annually according to stateline.org. I’m sure this has gone up since then. Maybe the Governor should take a pay cut? As a taxpayer in the state I am willing to do my part. I would be for a 1% sales tax in the state if it would help not only the budget but also keep teachers pay the way it is.
Teachers of these little disrespectful punks deserve a pay raise, not a reduction in pay! Wake up Gov. Jack Markell!
