LAUREL – Students in Tom Stetina’s math class at Laurel High School last Friday afternoon tackled a quiz on graph and linear equations.

They were also tuned to Mr. Stetina’s taping of the Oct. 23 edition of “Jeopardy” – the game show on which the 40-year-old mathematics teacher won $29,353 and earned “returning champion” status, a reign that ended the following night.

“A lot of the kids weren’t able to see it; they were working or whatever,” Mr. Stetina said. “They are working on it during commercial breaks and such.”

Mr. Stetina’s “Jeopardy” odyssey, taped in late August at Sony Picture Studios in Culver City, lasted two television air dates.

The Oct. 23 winner, he finished third on Oct. 24 show, exiting as a one-time champ, with more than $30,000 in total winnings – before state and federal taxes – and unforgettable memories of the long-running show hosted by Alex Trebek.

“It was really cool. I had a great time,” said Mr. Stetina, a resident of the Long Neck area.

Since taping Aug. 27 in California, Mr. Stetina had been under a mum’s-the-word shroud of silence for nearly two months. Show rules prohibit contestants from revealing information about questions, categories, outcomes and money won until the show airs.

“The hardest part was not being able to talk about two months,” Mr. Stetina. “The thing that made that easier is I don’t actually have the money yet. They don’t send the check until after it airs. So it is pretty easy to pretend you didn’t win anything when you actually haven’t gotten anything.”

On Oct. 24, he entered the Final Jeopardy round in third place with about $12,000. All three contestants answered the final question correctly – Mr. Stetina won $1,000 as the third place finisher.

After the tax man gets his share of federal, California and Delaware tax, Mr. Stetina expects he’ll be receiving a check for about $19,000, which he plans to use to pay off some debt and possibly finance a nice vacation.
