Uh, and watch those bogus ATMs at the Mall. I withdrew $100 and got socked for a $200 withdrawal from my account. Fortunately, my bank investigated and refunded my dough!
Take cash to the mall before going to the movies.

Mabye I should have chosen my words more carefully.
No business that accepts Credit Cards really eats the 3% (Really its more like an average of %2) They make up the difference in increased sales from people who would use the credit cards. There are lots of people who don't carry cash anymore.
Its their business decision to make, but in my opinion, a poor one. You said it yourself, if you don't like it, don't go to the movies. If enough people take your advice, carmike goes out of business...

| haha why would carmike want to eat 3% if they can pass it on to you? Would you like to lose three percent of your business for no reason at all? They are there to make money. If you don't like it then don't go to the movies. Plain and simple!

| Maybe it's easier to cook the books with cash that leaves no trail. Why do you think the owners of laundrymats and non-chain pizzerias are able to live so well?

I am a business owner, I can tell you that, when at the end of the month, you look at your bill for processing fee's, you would be happy to accept cash. I can see a store not accepting checks, big risk of bad checks nowadays.
Having said that, I would never stop accepting credit cards, because I would lose business from people who prefer to use their cards. Luckily, Carmike accepts my debit card, but they charge 99 cents to do it, their processing fee on a debit card transaction can not be any more than .35 cents.
Also, I pay 1.8% for swiped transactions, 2.8% for keyed transactions (Credit, not debit) It seems to me that a large company like Carmike would get an even better rate, so why can't they eat less than 3% on something as profitable as a $10 movie ticket and $5 popcorn and sodas?

High fees are a legit reason for a business to not accept certain debit/credit cards, if any at all. Those charges are passed on to the customers, and, in these times, are a legit cost of operating, just like the monthly electric bill. Unlike the latter, they're negotiable.
If I were a business owner, I'd be taking debit/credit cards only. No checks, no cash. Lower risk of theft.
Myself, it's better to rent/buy the movie DVD if there's a recent release worth watching (fat chance) than incurring the hassle and expense of going to a movie house. It's about the same money, and the movie can be repeatedly watched, with the only added expence being that of electricity.

We stopped going to the movie theaters a long long time ago. Once you get to
a certain age, it is difficult to sit for two hours without having to use the bathroom,
thus missing part of the movie you paid to see. Besides that, the refreshment
prices are totally ridiculous and many movies goers are down right rude.
The seats are not as comfortable as they were years ago. All that being said,
we enjoy our flix by renting DVDs or ON DEMAND....much cheaper and more
convenient. ( We have HD and a good sound system so the experience is just
as good).
I went to the Mall on the 4th around noon time, not very many people there.

| I find it totally hilarious that you all have nothing better to do then complain to the manager about them not taking credit cards. If you cannot scrape together nine dollars you don't belong at the movies in the first place. Did you get the free movie coupons that you had hoped to get by complaining to the manager BETH?

I complained to Carmike customer service and this is the response from the district manager. As far as Commerce bank it's not due to Commerce accpeting deadbeats, it is a matter of Carmike wanting to keep more money in thier pockets...As far as finding a real bank well I've been at several of the local banks and found Commerce to be the best at least I don't have to wait a day or two lag time for the computers/internet to update transactions allowing overdraft fees and then get the "oh don't rely on the ATM/internet" for your balance excuse when other bank's computers are slow or worse when it's pay day and a local credit union has lost all computers and is closed more than half the day because of it, and don't even get me started on trying to get to the bank before they close at 5:00 or Saturday before noon.
I apologize for your experience at our location in Dover. The
situation with Interlink is one in which we ourselves are caught in the
middle. The issue on this is not actually because of us. This is
caused by a disagreement between Interlink, the network that handles the
transactions on your debit card, and Debit Tech, the company that
processes our transactions, over convenience fees. Since they cannot
come to terms, Interlink refuses to allow Debit Tech to process any
transactions on their network. This is a situation over which we have
no control. Due to the very large transaction fees assessed to our
business by Visa, we opted not to take credit cards at many of our
locations, Dover being one of them. We are working with other companies
with more reasonable fees and hope to soon be able to accept other
credit cards. Also, Dover Mall is supposed to be getting new ATM
machines in the immediate future. If I can be of any further
assistance, please contact me. I appreciate your patronage and we will
see you at the movies.

| They don't take Commerce Bank checks or cards because the Bank accepts deadbeats for customers to build their account numbers. Find a real bank and you'll be happier.

Thanks to Newszap and this thread I was prepared going to the movies last night. I haven't been to the mall to see a movie in over a year and thanks to a lucky coincidence of reading this tread yesterday I saw that they no longer take commerce Bank cards and most credit cards. I'll think twice before I go bad for another movie there even though there are several I want to see in the coming months. What are they are too cheap to pay the service fee that they were never suppose to pass on to the customer so they stop accepting them all together? Boo hoo we charge highway robbery, $9.50 for a movie and over price the pop corn/soda/snacks but we can't cover the credit card service fee, that would take more money out of our fat pockets.. so too bad customer you're screwed if you don't have cash. Shame on Car mike for forgetting about customer service, and shame on the Mall to for not providing ATM machines any more. Who cares about customer service when the economy is down it won't make a difference?

| I've never been a big movie fan, but I think they are not going after people who simply want to see movies...they want people who are going there for the experience, to be with friends, etc.

There are no modern movies worth watching by anyone who has a positive IQ.
Buying DVDs to watch at home are much more convenient than going to the cinema, and those souped up home systems some folks buy put the theater to shame.
That the Carmike Cinema remains in operation is surprising.

| So dover mall lost all its sit in food establishments with the exception of the boscovs (nasty). Now they have gotten rid of all the ATM's. Dont try to use your visa or almost any local bank debit card at the movie theater, they dont accept it. The mall is supposed to be a place of convenience. Where is it?
