No, they are happy with the job that Biden did. When you figure out how that large of a population supports such a guy, you let me know. Delaware certainly isn't that large of a percentage of Democratic voters.

Biden wins 7th Senate term but may not serve
By BEN NUCKOLS
Associated Press Writer

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) _ Joe Biden won a seventh term in the Senate Tuesday, soundly defeating Republican challenger Christine O'Donnell and setting up several intriguing possibilities should he also win the vice presidency.

The Senate race call was based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

Biden, the running mate of Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama, was permitted under Delaware law to run for both offices. His victory guarantees that Democrats will hold onto the seat.

If the Obama-Biden ticket wins, outgoing Gov. Ruth Ann Minner would likely appoint Biden's replacement, although it is technically possible the task could fall to governor-elect Jack Markell. Delaware's governor and the new president will be inaugurated on the same day, Jan. 20, and Biden could wait until Markell is sworn in to resign his Senate seat.

If Republican John McCain is elected president, Biden would go back to the Senate.

Delaware political observers have long speculated that Biden was grooming his son, state Attorney General Joseph R. "Beau" Biden III, to take his place. But the timing isn't good for Beau Biden, a captain in the Delaware National Guard. He's about to be deployed to Iraq for a nine-month stint as a military prosecutor.

Beau Biden would be barred under military policy from performing the duties of any elective office while on active duty, and being the son of the vice president-elect would not result in his deployment ending early, said Lt. Col. George Wright, an Army spokesman.

Whoever is appointed senator would serve for two years before voters decide in 2010 who they want to fill the remainder of Biden's six-year term. That timetable has led to speculation that Minner would appoint a caretaker who would step aside in 2010, allowing Beau Biden to run. Minner, 73, has said she would not appoint herself.

"I guess the real catch here is whether or not Joe Biden is going to get involved and try to get somebody to hold the set for Beau Biden," Republican Rep. Michael Castle said.

Castle, who was expected to easily win a ninth term Tuesday in Congress, is likely the GOP's best option to pick up the Senate seat in 2010.

"I would consider it," he said of a possible run. "I'm not committed to anything."

Another possible successor to Biden is Lt. Gov. John Carney, who lost to Markell in a closely contested primary. Carney, 52, said Tuesday he was interested in the seat and had relayed that interest to Minner. But if he were appointed, he would prefer not to step aside in two years.

"I'd be willing to talk to the governor and others about whatever approach they wanted to take," Carney said. "For my own view, for the long term it would be better for Delaware to run and then run again, in terms of seniority and involvement in the issues."

Joseph Pika, a political science professor at the University of Delaware, said Castle's interest might push Minner toward appointing Carney. He also suggested that she might "want to establish a different legacy" by appointing Secretary of State Harriet Smith Windsor, who would become the state's first woman senator.

O'Donnell, 39, a conservative activist, accused Biden of lacking commitment to Delaware, a theme that resonated with some voters.

"I don't think any of them should be able to run for two things at the same time," said Sean Borgia, 46, a respiratory therapist from Wilmington. "Politicians get to be like an old shoe. It's hard to get rid of anybody."

Said Katelyn Rieley, 21, an O'Donnell supporter from Wilmington: "The thought of Ruth Ann Minner appointing our next senator is terrifying."

Biden supporters, however, said they were confident Minner would make a solid choice.

"We have a lot of great options," said Pam Finkelman, 59, of Wilmington.
